The Attorney will help provide supervision of legal staff and lead community-based outreach and trainings. The Attorney will also provide legal representation and advocacy on immigration matters including U and T visas, SIJS, adjustment of status, VAWA self-petitions, Battered Spouse Waivers, and naturalizations. The ideal candidate has experience managing a team, thrives working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, is comfortable with public speaking, and has a passion for helping to build partnerships and community.

About DVP

The Domestic Violence Project (DVP)'s mission is to help survivors of intimate partner violence, and their children live free of violence and abuse, marshaling the combination of legal and advocacy services necessary to secure justice and a dignified quality of life. We consider intimate partner violence – regardless of gender, sexual identity, religion, immigration, or other status – to be a human rights violation. We serve an average of 1,600 survivors annually across all five boroughs of NYC through our comprehensive direct services (legal representation in family law and immigration matters, holistic case management, and empowerment groups), plus an additional 2,000+ reached through community outreach, education, and clinics.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of full-time immigration attorneys, fellows, interns, and pro bono attorneys.
  • Organize internal trainings and facilitate external training opportunities for staff.
  • Zealously represent survivors in their immigration matters.
  • Collaborate with our entire DVP program to assist clients and increase effectiveness of programming.
  • Collaborate with DVP's Management team to participate in the development of the legal department's vision and priorities and then work to execute those plans.
  • Build and strengthen organizational relationships and communications with other organizations.
  • Conduct outreach, education, and know-your-rights events throughout NYC and remotely.
  • Manage the professional development and mentoring of staff, including identifying opportunities to support the growth and development of their legal skills.
  • Maintain records, statistics and funding requirements as needed.
  • All other tasks as assigned by the Director of Legal Services of survivors of intimate partner violence.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Admission to a state bar is mandatory.
  • 5-10 years of immigration experience with at least two years as a supervisor; must have prior experience training, supervising, or mentoring attorneys or legal interns.

  • Ability to work with clients in a sensitive and trauma-informed manner.
  • Proven project and time management skills; must manage multiple projects and competing priorities while demonstrating strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Comfortable providing and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Problem-solving and creative thinking abilities.
  • Ability to respond to the legal needs of immigrant survivors on an emergency or immediate basis.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, speaking and writing skills and the ability to apply these skills in diverse situations.
  • Aptitude for intense and thorough advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Interest and proclivity in working within a multi-disciplinary framework.
  • Must be able to travel between boroughs.
  • Can work evenings if necessary.
