    NATURE OF WORK

    The primary expectation of an incumbent assigned to this position is to attend and successfully complete the assigned, departmentally approved police academy.

    May perform various non-sworn police related functions within the department while waiting for academy commencement. Each officer will be held to a high standard of performance within this assignment.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The duties listed herein are illustrative of the essential duties of the job, and do not include all duties that may be required.

    As an entry level Police Recruit with the Frederick Police Department, we will pay to have you attend a State of Colorado certified Police Recruit academy.

    • The academy's training covers a wide range of topics and skills necessary to become a successful law enforcement officer which include learning : the law and criminal procedures;
    • communication and de-escalation skills; patrol tactics and crime scene investigation skills; community policing and problem solving;

    traffic investigations and use of force tactics as well as skills such as firearms, arrest control and driving. Upon successful completion of the police academy Colorado POST Certification recruits will be promoted to the rank of Police Officer.

    As a Police Officer you will handle incidents involving crime, traffic and quality of life issues helping to make Frederick a safe community in which to live, work and thrive.

    EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    • Twenty-one years of age or older, eligible to work in the U.S.
    • High school graduate or possess a G.E.D. certificate.
    • Ability to obtain Colorado Peace Officer Certification.
    • Must possess a valid Colorado drivers license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment.

    Must have no felony convictions, and no history of domestic violence.

    Must have a history of personal and professional honesty, integrity, and good judgment. Preference will be given to applicants who have no history of use, sale, or possession of illegal substances.

    All applicants who reach the final stages of the selection process will be required to submit to and successfully pass a drug screen, thorough criminal and personal background check, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and a physical examination and agility test.

    • Must be able to successfully qualify to possess a firearm in accordance with Federal and / or State regulations.
    • Must be available to work various shifts when necessary, including overnights, swing shifts, weekends, holidays, etc.
    • No felony convictions or conviction involving moral turpitude.
    • No illegal drug usage or related activities within the previous 5 years.
    • No use of marijuana within the last year.
    • No arrest for DUI, DWAI, or DUID within the last 5 years.

    PHYSICAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    The physical demands listed herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job.

    • This work requires varying degrees of physical responses from sedentary work to very physically demanding work, due to the nature of unpredictable and unforeseeable events that characterize police work.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see and hear, and to use hands to finger, handle, grasp or feel.

    The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and / or crawl.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and on occasion drag or carry up to 165 pounds.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places; in outside weather conditions, and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or blood pathogens, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.

    The employee occasionally experiences hazards to personal safety from gun fire and physical confrontations. Periodically, the employee is in stressful situations.

    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
    • Employees may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, including moisture, humidity, and / or extreme temperatures, ranging from over 100 degrees to below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
    • In order to retain employment as a Frederick Police Officer, all sworn personnel must successfully pass a Physical Ability Test once per year, as outlined in the Frederick Police Departments Policy & Procedure Manual.
