Police Assistant
This is a full time, non-exempt (hourly) position in the Police Department - Grade 6. This position is an excellent opportunity for those who may not be eligible to apply for police officer at this time, whether due to age, temporary disqualifications, or those who lack of experience and / or understanding of the profession. This position will allow the successful candidate to obtain insight into and experience with the Globe Police Department and the profession of law enforcement. The Police Assistant supports law enforcement personnel by performing a variety of non-sworn administrative and field duties. This civilian role is designed to relieve sworn officers of routine, non-hazardous responsibilities, thereby allowing them to focus on core policing functions.
Examples of duties include :
- Provide administrative support, such as filing, data entry, and processing reports or citations.
- Assist with traffic control at accident scenes, special events, and crime scenes under supervision.
- Respond to non-emergency calls for service (e.g., vehicle lockouts, minor property damage reports).
- Pick up and deliver police documents, evidence, and interdepartmental mail.
- Perform parking enforcement and issue citations for violations.
- Assist with front desk or lobby duties, answering phones and assisting the public.
- Maintain police vehicles, equipment inventory, and supplies.
- May assist in booking, fingerprinting, and photographing suspects.
- Prepare and maintain logs, forms, and records related to assigned duties.
- Ability to work under stressful circumstances.
- Possess skills to effectively communicate verbal, written and via police radio utilizing proper protocol / codes.
- Maintains department equipment, supplies and facilities.
- Adheres to federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Maintains a high level of personal and professional conduct that enhances the public trust in law enforcement. Adheres to the tenants of the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
- Prepares written reports using appropriate technology in order to document actions and investigative information.
- Performs all duties in strict compliance with appropriate safety and security standards. Ensures all applicable safety and health rules and regulations are followed.
- Maintain a strong understanding of confidentiality and handle all sensitive information in accordance with department policies and applicable laws.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned
Required qualifications include :
Education and Experience :
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; orAn equivalent combination of education and experience.Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; some knowledge of public safety principles and practices.Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, department rules and regulationsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, and supervisorsAbility to follow verbal and written instruction, communicate effectively orally and in writingMost importantly, the ability to work respectfully with the publicValid Arizona Driver's License or ability to obtain by first date of employmentMaintain all required certifications within assigned areaSpecial Requirements :
Must complete the Police Academy within 4 years of hire date. Start date of the Police Academy is at the discretion of the Police DepartmentMinimum Age 18No felony or disqualifying criminal convictionsA valid Arizona State Driver's License or ability to obtain oneAble to pass background investigationAble to pass a medical physical exam, written exam, departmental physical agility test, psychological test and oral boardAble to pass AZPOST approved drug screen and polygraph examMust be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as requiredMust be able to read and write the English language.
