Job description

The Department :

The Santa Clara City Library is a department of the City and has positioned itself as a dynamic community hub, providing access to information, literacy resources, educational programming, and promotes civic engagement in Santa Clara. The Library Department is organized into seven divisions : Administration, Adult Services, Branch Services, Customer Services, Facilities, Technical and Technology Services and Youth Services. Santa Clara City Library is in the process of finalizing and implementing its new Strategic Plan that will support the direction of future library services.

The Position :

This is a paraprofessional supervisory position in the classified service. Positions in this class are responsible for the supervision and direction of a work unit comprised of paraprofessional, clerical and / or Library Page staff. This recruitment is to fill a position at the Northside Branch Library. The person in the position will work closely with the Northside Library Program Coordinator in maintaining and improving day to day operations, customer service, effective material circulation and distribution, scheduling staff and volunteers, and may act as the back-up person in charge. May also develop and support branch programming with librarians. This person should have strong communication skills, a team mindset and community-based outlook.

The annual salary range for this position is $93,536.76 - $119,106.96 . This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range.

Education and Experience :

Minimum Education Requirements : Completion of sixty (60) semester units or ninety (90) quarter units from a college or university.

Minimum Experience Requirements : Three (3) years’ experience in customer or public service; paraprofessional library work; communication or digital communication; library technical services that may include ordering, procurement, cataloging, maintaining financial records and vendor engagement; community outreach or bookmobile operation.

  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one (1) year of experience for thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units up to two (2) years.
  • Completion of an Associate of Arts degree in Library Technology may substitute for the required education, plus one (1) year of the required experience.

License / Certifications : Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications : Two (2) years or more of customer service or public library experience

Other Requirements :

  • Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Candidates must attain a passing score on each phase of the examination process to qualify for the Eligible List. A department interview may be required prior to appointment.
