Step into Belden Universal’s modern, air‑conditioned manufacturing facility just 12 miles west of downtown Chicago, and start your first‑shift day at 5 : 00 AM with a team that takes pride in microns. As a Centerless Grinding Setup Machinist, you’ll work shoulder‑to‑shoulder with seasoned grinders to produce universal joints and components that keep critical industries moving.

A day in the life

You begin by reviewing work orders and engineering drawings, interpreting GD&T to understand features, tolerances, and inspection plans. You’ll set up centerless grinding and honing equipment—establishing zero and reference points; dialing in tool registers, offsets, and compensations; and configuring conditional switches. You’ll calculate and validate requirements using math, geometry, and trigonometry, prove part programs, and run first‑article pieces.

Throughout the run, you verify settings and dimensions on first‑run and sample parts against international standards, adjust as needed, and maintain specifications through disciplined in‑process measurements and adherence to quality procedures. Safety is your constant : you follow all protocols, complete preventive maintenance per manufacturer guidance, troubleshoot issues quickly, and document production and quality results without fail.

What you bring

• Centerless grinding experience (2+ years preferred)
• Comfort reading blueprints with strong GD&T interpretation
• Conceptual problem‑solving and a continuous improvement mindset
• Clear verbal communication and strong functional / technical aptitude
• Familiarity with controls, instrumentation, tooling, and coordination across teams
• Proficiency in manual machining practices
