Position Summary
The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for the timely and efficient scheduling of patients designated for surgical procedures to be performed by NSPC physicians.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Schedules, reschedules, and cancels onsite surgical procedures properly and according to established NSPC guidelines.
- Obtains and records patient demographics, insurance information, and all other pertinent details accurately in new and current patient charts to guarantee proper medical care and accurate claim payments.
- Communicates pre-surgery instructions accurately to scheduled patients.
- Interfaces with appropriate staff to ensure a cohesive working relationship in providing patient care services.
- Enters notes / special instructions needed for scheduling in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Effectively utilizes clinical knowledge when determining if appointment is consistent with the diagnosis / indications indicated by the provider.
- Completes accurate documentation of informed consent with patients for procedures and surgeries as needed.
- Provides accurate, detailed information to patients regarding test preparations, time of patients scheduled arrival, and any other directional information needed;
takes appropriate action in responding to questions from patients.
- Confirms patient’s insurance provider and either obtains prior authorization or communicates need for prior authorization to appropriate parties as needed.
- Ensures patients have proper medical clearance and pre-surgical testing as needed.
- Completes pre-procedure phone calls and confirms appointment times with patients via telephone.
- Ensures completion of assessment for advance directive, including DNR when applicable.
- Reviews discharge instructions with patients and ensures proper follow-up appointments are scheduled at the time the procedure is scheduled.
Requirements :
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) equivalent.
- CPR / BLS certification is a plus.
- At least one year of related administrative experience and / or training, preferably in a healthcare environment.
- Excellent patient care skills and awareness of the legal implications of work and words in healthcare.
- Knowledge of business / healthcare operations and standards of best practice, preferably those related to a specialty care provider.
- Knowledge of and experience with EMR and / or Electronic Practice Management systems and technologies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, specifically Word and Excel.
- The capacity to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment, while demonstrating resourcefulness and proactivity.
- Excellent organizational / multi -tasking skills with acute attention to detail.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service at all times by communicating effectively and professionally with a diverse population.
