Responsibilities
- Registered Nurses practicing as first assistants in surgery are functioning in an expanded perioperative nursing role.
- First assisting activities are further executed within the context of the nursing process and in accordance with the State Board of Nursing Practice and institutional policies.
- RNFA activities commonly include : assisting the surgeon with exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intra-operative technical functions under the supervision of a surgeon.
- Other activities may include certain delegated medical functions that can be assumed by the RN who is qualified to practice as an RNFA.
- A RN license is required as well as RNFA Certification through the AORN Training / Certification Program.
Qualifications
Job Requirements
- Minimum : Associate's Degree in Nursing or Diploma of Nursing and RNFA Certification through AORN
- Minimum : 3 years of RN experience and 2 years of RNFA experience. The 2 years of RNFA experience may be part of the 3 years of RN experience
- Valid NM Nursing license.
- Require BLS. Successful completion of an RNFA program through AORN with Certification.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Preferred : Technical training as a Scrub Nurse or Scrub Technician
