Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Critical Care and Emergency Services, the Unit Director, Burn Services is responsible for providing consistent clinical leadership and nursing practice oversight for UCSF Health St. Francis Hospital Bothin Burn Unit. Functional areas of oversight include inpatient and outpatient burn unit services.

Ensures the quality of patient care in the Burn Unit and outpatient services. Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Manages staff involved in providing clinical patient care. Responsible for administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources on a 24-hour basis.

Designs and oversees nursing and administrative operations in large and / or multiple patient care areas. Accountable for the overall administrative planning and coordination of the staffing, fiscal and material resources. Assists with the development and implementation of new programs and policies. Direct reports are typically supervisors and clinical staff.

Regulatory Accreditation Standards : Ensures that compliance and accreditation standards are met in all areas of responsibility. Develops and maintains departmental policy and procedures, and complies with all applicable regulatory standards.

Leadership : Fosters a work environment that supports teamwork, open communication and engagement across the organization. Establishes communication standards of performance, provides timely feedback and assures accountability to establish expectations. Stays up to date on new developments in the field and incorporates such in the department's scope of service. Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors, adheres to all policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service. Promotes individual professional growth development by meeting requirements for mandatory / continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals, which contributes to the success of the organization. Other duties as assigned.

Strategic Performance Improvement : Maintains high quality and service-oriented reputation for the Bothin Burn Unit through implementation of evidence based practice approaches that align with UCSF values to excellence.

Strategic Growth : collaborates with the physician leadership and intraprofessional teams to explore opportunities to expand and enhance services that can impact our community reputation and improve market share.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253,900 - $269,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Bothin Burn Center at UCSF Health St. Francis Hospital is San Francisco's only dedicated burn unit and the only American Burn Association Verified Burn Center in Northern California. The Center provides burn treatment to children and adults across the Bay Area and beyond. The center cares for approximately 300 inpatients and more than 1,000 clinic referrals annually, including 30-50 pediatric admissions. Celebrating more than 50 years of burn care since its founding in 1967, the center brings together an interprofessional team to guide patients from acute injury through recover and reintegration. Our team of burn experts includes plastic surgeons, registered nurses, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, psychiatrists, case managers, pharmacists and art and play therapists. All personnel are highly trained to meet the complex needs of burn patients from critical care through rehabilitation.

The 16-bed intensive care burn unit, the largest in northern California, is an isolation unit with an independent ventilating system to minimize the risk of outside contamination and maintain strict room temperature and humidity control. The Center has its own fully equipped operating room, state-of-the-art life support and monitoring equipment, and ultrasonic hydrotherapy for bathing wounds.

The Center is family friendly, with dedicated pediatric treatment rooms and play area, as well as the Nash Family Day Room to help all family members, young and old, feel comfortable and cared for.We also have an outpatient burn clinic located adjacent to the Center, where treatment of minor burns is provided Monday through Friday by appointment.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of nursing leadership experience required.
  • Must have experience in critical care and / or burn unit experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher level degree of nursing education required.
  • CA RN License
  • ABA Burn Certification required
  • Strong hospital management experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services
  • Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines.
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines.
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • Strong hospital management experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services. Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team.
