The Surgical Intermediate Care Unit is a fast-paced 12-bed unit providing intermediate care to a variety of adult patient populations. Patients admitted to the SIMU have undergone complex surgical procedures, have traumatic injuries from a variety of mechanisms, and / or require frequent interventions and monitoring. With typical 1 : 3 nurse : patient ratios, the SIMU nurses work with the interprofessional team to assess, plan, and implement care. Nurses in the SIMU care for patients receiving high risk medications, including medications for conscious sedation for complex procedures both on the unit and in procedural areas.
Individual contributors with responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty. Spends majority of time in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are typically limited without additional education or significant training and experience. Specialty license or certification required which is acquired through training and / or experience. This career stream will be most commonly applied to patient care areas. Requires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and require vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision. Problems are typically of a routine nature but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. Communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.
Minimum Requirements
Education : High School Graduate or Equivalent
Experience : No experience required
Licensure : American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. Certified to practice as a Nurse Aide in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR must meet one of the following criteria (required) : (1) Successful completion of the UVa PCT Education Program OR Successful completion of another PCT Education Program that has been approved by NPDS. (2) Documented proof of at least 1 year of recent (within past 2 years) experience in a similar PCT role from an outside institution. Candidate must successfully complete a written exam and must successfully demonstrate clinical skills during 6 month probationary period. (3) Passage of a nationally recognized and accredited PCT Certification exam. (Example - National Healthcareer Association - C-PCT). Present Certificate as verification. OR must meet one of the following criteria (required) : (1) Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Medical / Surgical Clinical Experience and Didactic are exempt from the Certified Nurse Aide requirement. (2) EMT or above certification. Candidate will complete the UVA PCT Course within 6 month probationary period (3) Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Position Compensation Range : $15.37 - $23.82 Hourly
