About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) :

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds.

Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision.

Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.

ISBVI is in the process of implementing a strategic plan to transition to a new, state-of-the-art campus.

Role Overview :

The Librarian works in the Indiana Educational Resource Center (IERC) statewide repository that provides educational materials in accessible formats for school-age students with visual impairments / print disabilities.

You will provide technical library and ordering assistance with digital rights managers and teachers in local education agencies (LEAs).

You will be the ex officio Assistant for the Federal Quota Registration and authorized user for the American Printing House for the Blind (APH), National Instructional Materials Access Center (NIMAC).

Key areas of focus are :

  • Procurement
  • Cataloging
  • Annual inventory process
  • Annual reports
  • Fulfillment and dissemination of accessible instructional materials to students in a timely manner.

A Day in the Life :

  • Oversee the library management system.
  • Monitor student registrations from LEAs.
  • Request, catalog, store, and retrieve educational materials.
  • Review and process special-order requests such as Internet tools, braille, large print, and digital formats.
  • Oversee the receipt and processing of specialized materials.
  • Contact media providers to secure pricing and prepare purchase requisitions.
  • Maintain purchase orders and accounts.
  • Download and / or assign publisher files from the APH NIMAC database as needed for production and / or transcription locally or for AMPs.
  • Respond to patron inquiries and provide technical assistance to teachers, digital rights managers, and staff.
  • Prepare federal, state, and quarterly financial and statistical reports.
  • Assist with APH Annual Census of Legally Blind Students, Federal Quotas, and expenditure of federal dollars.
  • Maintain federal quota fiscal spreadsheets and track state LEA expenditures.
  • Assist with short- and long-range planning for library services.
  • Assist in the development of electronic databases that are unique to the center and service population.
  • Communicate with library database programmers, problem-solve issues, and strategize changes.
  • Communicate with in- and out-of-state production facilities to ensure the timely production and delivery of specialized educational materials.
  • Train and supervise other IERC staff as requested by the supervisor.
  • Oversee office operations in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Prepare webinars and presentations as requested.

What You'll Need for Success :

  • Masters of Library and Information Science.
  • Two years of full-time professional experience as a Librarian.
  • Research skills.
  • Broad knowledge of electronic and information resources in various formats for specialized areas.
  • Able to assist in monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating federal and state program entities in meeting established standards and minimum requirements.
  • Complete knowledge and skills to provide training to users.
  • Intermediate to Advanced skillsets in MS Word and Excel. Understanding of SQL Database programming preferred.
  • Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, theories and principles of library and information science, and information literacy, in an environment of continual change due to rapidly developing technologies and changing methodologies.
  • Specialized knowledge and skills to assist in the development and training of programs for new staff and provide continuing education in recent informal and technological advances for current staff.
  • Mastery of verbal and non-verbal communication and the ability and skill to write succinctly and persuasively for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations, training, and webinars using various software tools, for BLV consultants and staff.
  • Ability to create and maintain databases, collect and analyze data, and prepare statistical reports utilizing various computer hardware and software.
  • Specialized knowledge of statistics and their uses.
  • Become proficient with the IERC library management system.
  • Acquire proficiency in the reading and writing of braille.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports :

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
