Position Information Posting Number PG193438TM Position Number 39CDT080221 Position Type Temporary Essential Job Duties The Intensive English Program (IEP) serves as a gateway to undergraduate programs by offering intensive English training for conditionally admitted international students who are academically competitive but have not yet met the English proficiency requirements.
Temporary Part-time IEP instructors can teach any number of hours of skills-based ESL classes with additional program-related responsibilities in a given semester. IEP instructors responsibilities may include but are not limited to, curriculum development, text selection, test administration, and end-of-term ceremonies.
•Teach non-credit skill-based ESL courses for academic purposes in short-term programs and/or regular 15-week semester
•Participate in prep week activities and other IEP instructor meetings, as scheduled throughout the semester
•Create lesson plans designed to meet curricular goals and objectives
•Begin and dismiss assigned classes at the appointed hours
•Follow curriculum guidelines for each class
•Adhere to lead-instructor created assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams
•Hold regularly scheduled office hours and/or be available to meet with students when requested
•Maintain Moodle page for each assigned class; Enter grades into Moodle in a timely fashion to keep students aware of where they stand academically
•Other duties as assigned. Is Time Limited Yes If Yes, Appointment Length Semester long and short-term programs 3 - 15 weeks. May continue, as needed. Position Information
Requirements and Preferences Work Schedule Between 8:00am and 6:30pm - hours vary with assignment Possible Saturday hours also Other Work/Responsibilities Participate in end-of-term completion ceremony and other program activities as requested. Minimum Experience/Education Bachelor’s degree with extensive experience teaching ESL at the secondary or post secondary level. Department Required Skills Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications; and awareness of second language learning issues and teaching methodologies within the ESL profession.
Experience engaging with students representing a range of cultural and academic perspectives. Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, ESL, or related field strongly preferred.
Candidates who have considerable ESL experience, but have a Master’s degree in an unrelated field, will be considered on a case-by-case basis
5+ years of full-time experience (or the equivalent) teaching ESL, preferably at the post-secondary level.
International teaching experience, participation in the Peace Corps, and /or fluency in a second language are highly desired
Experience using Google Apps
Experience using learning management systems such as Moodle or Blackboard Required License or Certification N/A Valid NC Driver's License required? No Commercial Driver's License Required? No
