Job Description
The Sahoo Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute studies the genetic and functional mechanisms that drive bone marrow failure, clonal hematopoiesis, and progression to MDS and AML. We integrate genomic and functional approaches on patient derived samples, iPSC and mouse disease models to uncover mechanisms and therapeutic vulnerabilities.
Current project areas include:
1. Germline predisposition to MDS and AML: mechanisms by which SAMD9L mutations cause hematopoietic failure and predispose to leukemogenesis
2. Chromosome 7 aneuploidy syndromes: modeling monosomy 7 associated bone marrow failure and its role in clonal selection
3. Clonal evolution and therapeutic vulnerabilities: using single cell sequencing to track clonal dynamics and to identify targets in high risk MDS and AML
We seek a full-time Research Tech to support our cellular, and in vivo studies. The role requires strong organizational skills, careful record keeping, and comfort working in a fast-paced research environment.
The key responsibilities will include if not limited to:
• Perform molecular biology workflows: DNA/RNA extraction, cloning, standard PCR genotyping, qPCR, gel electrophoresis.
• Support mouse studies: Main mouse colonies, perform genotyping, manage timed breeding, performing procedures (tail vein and intraperitoneal injections, routine blood collection) and sample collection (per approved protocols).
• Participate in laboratory projects involving the application of basic molecular biology techniques and mouse animal models.
• Open to learn new techniques, be inquisitive, collaborative and collegial
• Maintain lab inventories, data archiving, and uphold safety and compliance standards.
To apply: Provide a CV, a brief cover note describing relevant experience, and contact information for two to three references.
Required Qualifications
• Prior experience with mice colony management, breeding, and experimental procedures like routine blood collection, tail vein and intraperitoneal injections.
• Working knowledge of and willingness to master molecular and cell biology techniques, including DNA and RNA isolation, PCR , qPCR, and flowcytometry.
• Willingness to learn and assist in generating libraries for next generation sequencing (NGS) methods
• Strong organization, attention to detail, record-keeping, and ability to work in a fast-paced setting
• Flexibility, reliability, and excellent communication skills; enjoys teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications
• Coursework or training in a biological science (molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, or related field).
• Experience with cell culture and lab project management
• Demonstrated communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to follow instructions
