Position Summary

The Work and Life Coach (WLC) plays a vital role in nurturing the overall growth of OLS students, imparting crucial skills for both personal and professional advancement.

Responsibilities include delivering comprehensive support and coaching in diverse environments, in line with the OLS skills development model.

Before making decisions, the incumbent will consult with their supervisor. This role reports to the OLS Internship Program Manager, who in turn reports to the Associate Dean.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Position Salary Range : $1,860.63 / month- $2,604.90 / month

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only. The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations.

Typically, new hires start no higher than $2,046.70 / month based on Bellevue College Exempt salary schedule.

This position is expected to NOT be eligible for benefits because eligibility is limited only to employees working at least an average of 80 hours in eligible employment for more than 6 consecutive months and at least 8 hours a month.

This is a 10-month cyclical part-time position requiring 16 hours per workweek.

About the Department

Bellevue College's Occupational Life Skills program offers an associate degree focusing on occupational and life skills (OLS) for students with learning disabilities.

Through our customized curriculum, hands-on learning opportunities, and internships exceeding 250 hours, we prepare students with the competitive skills needed for success after graduation.

Essential Functions

Student Coaching Support-Workplace / Internship Skills

  • Meets 1 : 1 with interns on a regular basis to guide students through stages of the internship experience including on-site education, preparation, work, and reflection.
  • Provides consultation to internship business by promoting natural supports, negotiating reasonable accommodations and educating on and advocating for diversity in the workplace.
  • Acts as a liaison between intern and internship business partner maintaining business relationships.
  • Advises and instructs students in soft skills, self-determination and critical thinking required for success in the workplace.
  • Collaborates weekly with the internship program manager to support students and businesses effectively.
  • Completes notes on student coaching sessions in the OLS database within 24 hours and reports all questions and concerns to the supervisor within the same time frame.

Actively details any concerns related to student performance and progress.

Student Coaching Support-Life Skills

  • Coaches students individually and in small groups on how to clean and properly maintain all aspects of their assigned rooms including bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and common areas.
  • Coaches small groups on topics including but not limited to : health, hygiene, fitness, transportation, effective communication, conflict resolution, community awareness, & safety.
  • Leads student social activities, facilitating positive interactions for students amongst their peers and others in the community during social outings.
  • Completes notes on student coaching sessions in the OLS database within 24 hours and reports all questions and concerns to the supervisor within the same time frame.

Actively details any concerns related to student performance and progress.

Assists OLS Team / supervisor in assessing each student s current functioning level, across all domains.

Program Meetings and Events

Attends and participates in trainings and staff and community meetings scheduled during the quarter. Some events take place in the evenings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in relevant field. Any combination of relevant education and / or experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience adapting workplace environments to support reasonable accommodations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of various disability traits and effective use of support techniques.
  • Effective verbal, written interpersonal communication skills while maintaining professionalism with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Intermediate level computer skills including the most current Windows operating system; Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Excel and MS Word programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with students, businesses, and workplace teams.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse colleagues and / or students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated experience with process improvement or business operations improvement.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the value of higher education as described in the BC Vision, Core Values, and Mission statements.
  • Ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Previous experience as a job coach, job developing skills a plus.
