Job description

Physician Assistant (PA) to join our multidisciplinary Abdominal Transplant, Uterus Transplant, and Hepatobiliary Surgery team. This is an advanced practice role focused on comprehensive inpatient and outpatient management of complex hepatobiliary and transplant patients.

The role includes participation in inpatient rounding, outpatient clinic, education conferences, supporting patients undergoing liver, kidney, pancreas, and uterus transplantation as well as complex hepatobiliary surgeries.

  • Provide high-level inpatient care, including daily rounding, medical management, and discharge planning for transplant and hepatobiliary surgery patients.
  • Manage patients in the outpatient clinic, including pre- and post-transplant evaluations, post surgical follow-up and hepatobiliary disease.
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plans in collaboration with fellows, residents and attending surgeons.
  • Manage immunosuppression, surgical complications, comorbid conditions while patient remains in the surgical transplant clinic
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary transplant selection meetings.
  • Provide education to patients and families about surgical procedures, transplantation, medications, and follow-up care.
  • Serve as a liaison between surgeons, transplant coordinators, consulting services, and allied health staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage acutely ill, high-complexity patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary, team-based patient care.

    Job Summary

    The PA Surgical Specialty - Non-Operative is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider. They render direct patient care and have delegated prescriptive authority. They are credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider, recognized by Medicare and Medicaid. The Advanced Practice Provider provides medical care based on the scope of practice set by the supervising physician.

    Surgical providers care for adult and pediatric patients. They specialize in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Cosmetic, Vascular, Trauma, Transplant, Urology, Plastics, or other specialties.

    Essential Functions of the Role

  • Assesses the physical and mental condition of patients by performing and obtaining comprehensive or problem-focused physical examinations and medical histories.
  • Orders, collects, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs.
  • Prescribes or recommends medical drug therapies or other treatments. Performs procedures following approved policies, focusing on efficacy, safety, and cost. Recommends interventions to change behavior linked to health risks.
  • Formulates and implements patient treatment plans based on assessments and evidence-based medicine. Collaborates with physicians and team members when needed. Evaluates patient's response to care and its effectiveness.
  • Counsels patients and families about medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsels patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with food supplements, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies.
  • Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient's treatment plans and outcomes. Initiates timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise.
  • Provides consultation level services for conditions / problems related to the Providers specialty, level of experience and training.
  • Manages patients in a healthcare setting(s) other than primary clinic setting (e.g., inpatient, emergency services).
  • Performs invasive procedures specific to scope of practice and providers level of expertise as delegated by supervising Physician.
  • Performs follow-up with patients both pre- and post-operatively. May also round on patients in the hospital or see patients in the Emergency Department.
  • May be required to perform patient care duties beyond regular schedule based on coverage needs of the department.
  • Key Success Factors

  • Knowledge of information and techniques is needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions

  • Skill in the use of computers and related software applications
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes-based patient treatment plans

  • Ability to interpret and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Texas
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA)
