Job Summary

Application Deadline : Thursday, October 23, 2025 at 11 : 59 p.m. Note : materials submitted on the last day must not time out. Department : Counseling. Months worked : 11 months. FTE : 1.00. Starting Salary Range : $77,615 (Class II, Step 6) to $107,156 (VII, Step 10) annually for an 11-month contract. Anticipated Start Date : Spring 2026.

Job Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The UMOJA Counselor / Coordinator will coordinate and enhance the cultural and educational experiences of African American, Black, and other students within the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. The role includes providing counseling services related to transfer, vocational / occupational programs, and career and academic skills development from a student-centered and culturally sustaining lens. Responsibilities include oversight of program outreach and retention efforts, learning community development, building community among students and faculty peers, MIS data reporting, acting as campus liaison for the UMOJA Community, and supporting the campus in achieving success outcomes for African American and Black students. The Counselor / Coordinator will contribute to evolving the dedicated space for student support programs (Puente, Justice Scholars, UMOJA, etc.) and assist with development and assessment of student learning outcomes and program planning. Participation on campus committees and leadership in campus, community, and professional organizations are anticipated. Duties may include professional and student-centered overnight conferences and field trips. The position complies with open-access commitments and serves a diverse student population. Other duties may be assigned per the faculty contract. References : the AFT contract available at gcccd.edu.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, or the equivalent. (Note : a bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification.)   • Experience in educational, career, and personal counseling at a community college, university, or clinical setting.
  • Experience providing program planning for professionals and student staff.
  • Experience advising African American, Black, and other students about certificates, degrees, and transfer requirements.
  • Training / experience in personal and crisis counseling.
  • Ability to use technology in providing counseling services.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to support the diverse backgrounds of students within the Black diaspora and other communities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with UMOJA or related programs, or 2 years in other agencies serving special populations pursuing higher education.
  • Experience supervising / training professionals and student staff.
  • Experience teaching career planning, college success, or personal development courses at the post-secondary level.
  • Understanding of factors affecting Black and African American student success and an ability to facilitate supportive conditions for which these students thrive.
  • Experience developing relationships between campus programs and community agencies for Black and African American student success within the California Community College system.
  • Active participation in community and professional organizations and higher education institutions.
  • Knowledge of current theories and best practices in basic skills, retention, academic goal attainment, and transfer for Black and African American students.
