General Summary of Position

Ensures a safe environment for our patients, staff and visitors. Patrols hospital property responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects or persons which may impact the security and / or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors, and responds according to established policies, procedures and regulations.

Officers are essential associates in a 24 / 7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work "off-shifts.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.

Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

  • Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus / grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
  • Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities. Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors and all others remain safe, calm and respected while onsite.
  • Provides assistance for way-finding, parking, deliveries and other requested information for the hospital and MedStar affiliates.
  • Responds to security and medical code calls. Investigates incidents and accidents. Gathers information and evidence. Notifies appropriate authorities or superiors and calls for back-up assistance as necessary.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings and trials.
  • Works cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
  • Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds, as required. Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons which might require police action.

Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety, security, and law violations.

  • Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
  • Monitors camera surveillance system, access control and intrusion detection system as directed.
  • Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
  • Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
  • Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • May be exposed to assaults and / or hazards from internal / external disasters.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Higher level of education is preferred and may be considered in lieu of prior experience.

Experience

  • 1-2 years of progressively more responsible job related experience required
  • In lieu of the related experience, an internal candidate with one year of MWCH tenure may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Special Police Officer - DC - SPO within 90 Days required
  • Qualification at the firearms range with department issued weapon within 90 Days required
  • DL - Valid State Driver's License in good standing required
