About Our Organization :

The Norman Howard School was established in 1980 by parents and community professionals, and is a nonprofit, NYSED-approved, 12 : 1 : 1, academic, special education program. Students grades 5-12 from over 30 school districts experience a rich and diverse school culture, learn strategies for managing their special learning needs, and graduate alongside their public school peers.

Job Summary :

  • We are seeking reliable and flexible Per-Diem Substitute Teachers to support our students in the absence of regular classroom teachers. The ideal candidate will maintain a positive learning environment, follow lesson plans, and ensure continuity of instruction across grade levels and subject areas.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Deliver lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the regular teacher.
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with school policies and procedures.
  • Take attendance and document classroom activities as required.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Follow all school safety and emergency procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of content-related pedagogy
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a classroom and engage students.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Flexibility to work on short notice and adapt to different school environments and grade levels.

    • Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Valid NYS teaching certification preferred.
  • Prior teaching or classroom experience preferred.
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to different classroom environments and grade levels.

    • Work Schedule :

  • On-call basis, as needed.
  • Assignments may vary in length from a single day to multiple days.

    • Compensation :

  • $130 Full Day (4 hours or more)
  • $65 Half Day (less than 4 hours)
