We are looking for an dynamic, energetic and ambitious Environmental Health & Safety Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will report directly to the Global Director of EH&S for Superior Essex, directly supporting all Essex Brownell facilities’ to provide technical consultation, support, and guidance to leadership and team members on safety, occupational health, environmental matters and product compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide safety oversight, safety & environmental guidance and advice for existing operations, programs and procedures. These may include but are not limited to: Hazardous waste activities, Determination of hazardous materials for transportation, Location Emergency Response Plan (LERP); Electrical safety, Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures Plan (SPCC); Hazard Communication and Globally Harmonized System (GHS), Safety Data Sheets, Product Compliance (including CA Prop 65, Conflict Minerals, REACH, RoHS, PFAs, and TSCA, plus any new programs), Export Compliance (including knowledge of Harmonized Tarriff Schedule “HTS” , Export Control Classification Number “ECCN”, Free Trade Agreements, Fire Prevention, Lock out/tag out (LOTO), Ergonomics, sustainability and waste management compliance, waste minimization, pollution prevention, Safety Committee oversight, DOT, RCRA, OSHA requirements and proactive incident prevention and injury reduction.
- Coordinate safety & environmental training for current and new team members.
- Maintain training records and documentation.
- Support Worker's Comp reporting process.
- Refine existing programs and procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
- Maintain documents showing compliance with programs and procedures.
- Track Federal, State and Local safety & environmental regulations and evaluate their effects on operations.
- Interface with Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, Technology, Quality, Purchasing, Legal Affairs and others to meet assigned safety & environmental objectives.
- Establish and coordinate facility audits and inspections to assure all facility operations are in compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations and corrective actions are completed and documented.
- Involved with local community LEPC and joint community right to know efforts.
- Coordinate and participate in Sustainability and Green initiatives to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle materials to reduce our carbon emissions footprint
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Proven process orientation, an ability to work in an environment that is multi-faceted and fast-paced. Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, strong math aptitude and the ability to be self- driven and work independently. A superior track record of trust and confidentiality is required; position will handle highly confidential information.
- Periodic travel to provide assistance at other SPSX/Brownell Locations. Occasional travel to attend off site seminars and training activities for continued safety and/or environmental development. 35% or less.
- Activities such as standing, extensive walking, climbing stairs / ladders, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, handling and may be exposed to hot/cold temperatures will occasionally be required.
- Frequent use of computers and office equipment is required.
- Ability to support on call and work after hours as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
BS/BA degree required; prefer a degree in engineering or a science related field. A minimum of 3 to 5 years' experience required as a Safety and Environmental Coordinator.
COMPUTER EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: Excellent skills in Microsoft Office required, strong information systems aptitude.
