JOB DESCRIPTION
The Safety Superintendent is responsible for leading the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) program for the plant. This role ensures regulatory compliance, leads emergency preparedness and incident investigations, and fosters a safety-first culture. The Safety Superintendent develops and implements HSE policies and procedures, manages safety training and communications, and serves as a key liaison between departments and external agencies. This position provides guidance and support to employees and leadership in maintaining a safe work environment and continuous improvement of safety performance.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
ØLead in the development and implementation of health and safety programs that support the company’s goals and its HSE policies, plans and procedures.
ØDevelop, implement, enforce, and continually improve the company’s safety policies, plans and procedures.
ØMonitor compliance and maintain working knowledge of all applicable local, state, and federal safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
ØFacilitate and support with incident investigations, emergency response planning, employee training, and contractor evaluation efforts.
ØEnsure the company participates in the LEPC (local emergency planning committee) as well as CAP (Community Advisory Panel).
ØSupport HSE Manager to ensure coverage for absences and to meet special demands i.e. shut-downs, turnarounds, or other projects.
ØDevelop and lead Emergency Response team, including appropriate participation in fire school or emergency response training or other appropriate training.
ØProvide guidance and leadership to all levels of the organization with respect to the company’s health and safety compliance tools and strategies.
ØDevelop communications and employee training to support a positive safety culture.
ØDevelop and administer appropriate safety recognition programs.
ØLoss control responsibilities which include: conducting inspections and audits related to the Loss Control program as assigned, participating in Hazard Reviews as needed, recommending safety improvements, completion of safety action items as assigned, completing required regulatory training, and compliance with all applicable regulations.
ØConduct, oversee and/or assist with accident investigations, annual health checks, etc.
ØPlan and purchase plant safety equipment to include Personal Protective Equipment and maintain compliance with all safety standards.
ØDevelop, organize, and present all safety training and all related records.
ØAct as head of plant safety committee and oversee/direct all associated activities.
ØConducts or performs annual health and safety studies for example noise exposure.
ØConducts contractor safety orientation and contractor prequalification evaluations.
ØMaintains high ethical standards in the work place and high standard of plant housekeeping and safety awareness.
ØReports all irregular issues and problems to management for solution.
ØMaintains good communication with other managers, staff & outside contacts.
ØComplies with all company policies and procedures.
ØProvide follow-up and verification of effectiveness.
ØCollaborate with management to develop safety goals and objectives.
ØMaintain safety records and prepare reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
ØAnalyze and evaluate potential hazards in the workplace and develop strategies to eliminate or reduce those risks.
ØCoordinate emergency response drills and ensure readiness for safety incidents.
ØStay current on industry trends and regulatory changes related to workplace safety.
ØPromote a safety-first culture through communication and employee engagement initiatives.
ØMaintain and Post OSHA 300 Log.
ØReview Safe Work permits and Lock-Tag-Try Log sheets.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
vBachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field Professional certification (e.g., CSP, CHST) preferred.
vProven experience in a safety management role.
vStrong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices.
vExcellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
v10+ years of experience in a petrochemical plant. Minimum 5 years in safety environmental management.
