Responsibilities
- Guard and supervise inmates; monitor prisoner behavior and intervene as necessary following established regulations.
- Periodically inspect locks, windows, doors and gates of the facility.
- Keep records of prisoner information, activities and incidents; process entry of new prisoners; inspect prisoners, visitors, and mail for contraband.
- Monitor conduct of prisoners according to policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Guard facility entrances to screen visitors and anyone entering the facility to prevent contraband or weapons.
- Inspect the jail facility for weapons, valuables, drugs or contraband.
- Escort inmates to locations within or outside the facility according to regulations and procedures.
- Record information such as prisoner identification, charges, and incidents of disturbances or security breaches.
- Use weapons, handcuffs, and physical force according to regulations to maintain discipline and order.
- Observe and serve food trays to inmates, count items, utensils and trays for proper accounting.
- Arrange schedules for prisoners including work assignments, visits and other appointments.
- Prepare inmates for release by inspecting paperwork for accuracy; verify identity and final release of prisoner.
Qualifications and Requirements
High School diploma or HSE.Must be at least 18 years old.Deputy jailers must be alert at all times and attentive; capable of strong interpersonal and written communication skills.Must possess good decision-making skills and be able to adapt to stressful working conditions.Must be able to be alert and observant.Applicant must have no felony convictions.Must be able to work independently under limited supervision.Policy
The policy of the Marion County Sheriff's Office states that if an applicant is unsuccessful in completing any portion of the pre-employment screening, the applicant may not reapply for the same position for one calendar year from the date notified. The duration of pre-employment screening may extend up to one calendar year depending on the number of available positions.
