Job Title : Prisoner Transport Officer

The City of Buckeye is seeking a dedicated individual to join our Police Department as a Prisoner Transport Officer. This full-time, regular position offers a competitive salary range of $46,904.00 - $70,304.00 annually and is located in Buckeye, AZ.

General Purpose : Under general supervision, transports prisoners and documentation between various locations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Transports individuals, documentation, or materials between various locations (i.e. moves prisoners or others between detention facilities, jails, courts, attorney offices, etc.) Maintains logs / records of transport activities.
  • Takes custody of prisoners from arresting officers and books into jail. Performs physical searches and verifies the identity of persons in custody. Obtains fingerprint records of prisoners / suspects. Conducts intoxilyzer test if required. Secures prisoner's personal property. May conduct prisoner interviews.
  • Monitors activities and behavior of prisoners during transport and / or while in custody. Maintains discipline of prisoners. May require verbal or physical means to restrain violent or combative prisoners.
  • Removes prisoners from holding areas in accordance with established security procedures and secures prisoners within appropriate areas at destinations. Escorts / accompanies prisoners within facilities, in courtrooms or during meetings. Returns in-custody prisoners to other local holding facilities.
  • Prepares, maintains, reviews and / or processes various reports and documentation such as booking documents, transport logs, parole documents, court recaps, prisoner housing billings, inputs arrest data, etc. Assists prisoners in court hearings with completion of documents.
  • Provides prisoner care by ensuring cleanliness and safety of holding areas and transport van, ordering meals and performing CPR / first aid or obtaining medical assistance as needed for ill or injured prisoners.
  • Processes prisoners release from jail.
  • Work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, extended hours, and scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
  • Adjust schedules for court, call-outs, training and other required activities.
  • Use a variety of police and medical equipment including, but not limited to, computer equipment, department-issued firearms, handcuffs, chemical agents, electronic control devices, flashlights, automated external defibrillators and other modern police and medical equipment.
  • Work under stress and use good judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Handle stressful, hostile, or irrational persons, whether due to physical or mental impairments, drugs and / or alcohol, or other factors.
  • Exercise discretion in the use of force and law enforcement powers.
  • Operate a police vehicle and specialized equipment, including radio and in-car computer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education and Experience : High School diploma or GED equivalent AND completion of basic law enforcement, corrections, or detention officer training program or possession of valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or one (1) year experience and / or training involving law enforcement, corrections facility or detention center work; OR any combination of education, training and experience providing the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be able to successfully pass AZPOST firearms qualification and medical exam.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, laws, and ordinances relating to transporting and custody of prisoners, including department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general safety practices, legal liabilities and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Ability to apply principles of persuasion and / or influence over others.
  • Ability to use a personal computer.
  • Skill and ability to deal effectively with combative, intoxicated, mentally ill, angry and uncooperative individuals.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with employees, officials, other agencies and the general public.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • 12-Month Goals :

  • Successful completion of detention officer training program if not already trained / certified.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of applicable codes, laws and ordinances relating to transporting and custody of prisoners, including department policies and procedures.
  • Pass AZPOST firearms qualification.
  • Special Requirements : Must successfully pass a pre-employment screening to include a comprehensive background investigation, drug test, polygraph, and psychological exam.

    Physical Demands / Work Environment : Work is performed outdoors and in standard office environment. Reports To : Prisoner Transport Supervisor. Supervision Exercised : None. FLSA Status : Non-exempt.
