Licensed Veterinary Technician Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Licensed Veterinary Technician is responsible for a variety of tasks related to customer
service and patient care within the veterinary practice. Tasks include animal handling,
pre- and post-operative patient care, anesthesia monitoring, x-rays and proper prophy technique.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Required : 2 years previous veterinary office experience
- Preferred : Active state technician license
- Preferred : High School graduate or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Prepare and maintain exam, treatment, and surgical roomsGreet clients and patientsObtain patient history and updates from clientsThe ability to perform and / or assist with diagnostic proceduresMaintain accurate and complete patient medical recordsThe ability to calculate medication dosagesReview patient instructions with clients and distribute educational materialsObtain blood samples-cephalic / saphenous / jugularProcess and submit lab work both in house and to outside labsClean, wrap, and sterilize surgical instruments and surgical supplies (gowns,towels, etc.)The ability to properly run an autoclavePlace IV catheters and assist with surgical equipment monitoring (anesthesia,ventilator, fluid pump, etc.)Restrain patient for examination with the veterinarian.Take notes on examination results and updating records.Assist in inventory control of medical supplies.Administer medications that the veterinarian has prescribed.Monitor and track vitals during / following surgery.Anesthesia : induction, maintenance, monitoring and recovery.Dentistry : ultrasonic scaling, hand scaling, polishing, and general knowledge of the oral cavity, charting, AVDS abbreviations.Radiology : full mouth intraoral radiographs, ability to use digital DR and CR systems.Calm, comfort and properly handle animals before, during and after procedures.Take pets for a walk during their visit and before they go home.Regularly clean the veterinary facility, ensuring that it remains in a sanitary and attractive condition. Dry mop whenever hair / paper is on the floor.Clean and sterilize the animal enclosures in order to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and provide a pleasant environment for the clinic’s patients.Clean, brush, remove bandages each patient before they go home.Maintain veterinary equipment in a sterile condition, in order to prevent postoperative infections.PHYSICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lift and / or carry up to 40 pounds from floor level and above at least several timesper day
The ability to work in a stationary position at a computer for long periods of timeThe ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and climb for longperiods of time
The ability to physically restrain all sizes of pets on the floor and on the examtable
Must be able to grasp, hold, and manipulate objectsPossess vision abilities to detect, observe and assess, including close, distance,color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjustfocus

Compensation negotiable based on credentials and experience with a hourly pay range from $27-$36 hour. The actual rate offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
