Executive Director Specialty and Ambulatory Pharmacy role at Boston Medical Center (BMC)

Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS) is a $6 billion revenue integrated academic health care system whose purpose is to provide equitable and value-based continuum of care. The pharmacy section of BMCHS is a broad, complex organization made up of both hospital and health plan pharmacy service lines. With more than 700 FTEs and $1B in revenue, BMC hospital pharmacy is a crucial part of both the broader hospital and system operations.

Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer, the Executive Director of Specialty and Ambulatory Pharmacy provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for pharmacy service lines including specialty pharmacy, home infusion, ambulatory pharmacy, and infusion services. This role drives innovation, advances health equity, optimizes performance, and leads multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered pharmaceutical care across the continuum. The Executive Director will also lead government advocacy, policy engagement, and 340B program stewardship to position BMCHS as a national leader in equitable, innovative, and sustainable pharmacy care.

This role is accountable for advancing quality, safety, regulatory compliance, financial sustainability, and growth across these service lines. The Executive Director ensures all legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements are met across BMCHS, affiliates, and satellites, while upholding the organization’s mission and values.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

  • Strategic Leadership & Alignment : translate system-wide priorities into departmental goals for ambulatory, specialty, home infusion, and infusion services. Embed health equity and innovation into strategic planning and address disparities in access, outcomes, and affordability. Anticipate trends in healthcare delivery, drug utilization, reimbursement, and policy to position BMCHS Pharmacy for long-term success. Represent BMCHS in government and regulatory advocacy efforts to influence policy.
  • Financial Performance & Resource Stewardship : drive financial accountability across service lines, oversee specialty pharmacy, infusion, and ambulatory revenue streams (including payer contracts), optimize 340B strategies, and lead forecasting, investment planning, and resource allocation for sustainable growth. Provide P&L support and advice for outpatient, specialty, and community pharmacy financial performance.
  • Operational & Clinical Excellence : oversee safe, efficient, and patient-centered operations; implement innovative care models (e.g., telepharmacy, home-based infusion, technology-enabled medication management) to improve access and outcomes; maintain best practices in supply chain, infusion reimbursement, and specialty drug oversight.
  • Compliance, Accreditation & Governance : ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards; maintain readiness for inspections and audits including 340B audits; develop and enforce policies; integrate equity-focused quality metrics into compliance frameworks.
  • People Leadership & Culture : create a high-performing, inclusive work environment; lead, mentor, and develop staff across pharmacists, technicians, liaisons, and leaders; drive workforce planning, succession planning, and talent development; foster a culture of innovation, equity, inclusion, and patient-centered care.

Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience : Advanced degree in Pharmacy (PharmD) or related field required, or B.S. in Pharmacy plus equivalent experience. Ten or more years of progressive Pharmacy or related optimization or business experience.

Preferred Education and Experience : Experience in an academic medical center; MBA or MHA.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Required : Valid license as a pharmacist in the State of Massachusetts.

  • Ability to promote collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven track record of developing, mentoring, and managing people.
