Under direct supervision from the Breeding Colony Manager, the Lab Animal Technician I will be responsible for maintaining laboratory mouse breeding colonies along with some husbandry duties. This position involves a range of tasks and functions that are typically essential to continue critical vivarium operations. Typically, the LAT I will change and maintain 500 breeding colony cages.
Duties and Responsibilities :
All tasks are performed according to institute and industry SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)
- Changes cages per the AF Husbandry SOPs and performs regular room maintenance tasks.
- Assists in cage washroom operations.
- Maintains a breeding colony for 1 or more PIs.
- Completes animal health checks; observes general health condition of each animal assigned under technician’s care. Observations include checking each cage for adequate food and water, and animal health observations for pregnant animals, new litters and for signs of distress, illness, or injury due to phenotype expression or experimental procedures.
- Breeding colony maintenance procedures include mating mice, weaning litters, ear notching mice, and collecting tail snips for genotyping purposes.
- Utilizes the LabTracks database to maintain up-to-date and accurate breeding colony records.
- Directly communicates with research lab contacts regarding colony maintenance requests or health findings.
- Documents findings using appropriate forms and methods and communicates new phenotype observations to the research lab contact and Breeding Colony Manager.
- Treats animals for routine conditions such as dermatitis or abrasions caused by aggressive behavior.
- Separates aggressive animals and provides additional cage enrichment materials.
- Reports non-routine, unexpected health concerns to the Attending Veterinarian, Manager or Animal Health Coordinator and research lab contact
- Reads the Animal Use Protocols (AUFs) to become familiar with research projects
- Notes authorized users, mouse lines and crosses associated with AUF.
- Documents special care requirements for colonies under technician’s care (e.g., food supplements with start and end dates.
- Maintains animal and cage census and ensures appropriate per diem rate is applied to census records
Education and / or Experience :
High School diploma and 1 years’ progressive lab animal experience required or equivalent education, training and / or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attainedAALAS ALAT certification or RVT license preferredKnowledge, Skills and / or Abilities :
Ability to work in environment which contains animal dander and dust particlesAbility to perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists and hands; regular bending and lifting, sitting and standing on hard floor surfaces and pushing and pulling of carts loaded with caging and accessoriesAbility to lift and stack feed and bedding bags up to 40 poundsMust wear institute supplied scrubs, face mask, shoe covers and hair bonnet as well as other task-related personnel protective equipment including face shield or goggles, heat resistant autoclave gloves, nitrile or chemical resistant gloves, apron, and back support beltAbility to work one of the defined work schedules : 6 : 30-3 : 00 or 7 : 00-3 : 30 Monday through FridayPossess a demonstrated interest in the humane care, management, and utilization of animals in a research settingProficiency in handling and restraint of rodentsKnowledge of animal health, disease control / prevention, and technical procedures gained through combination of education, training and practical hands-on experienceKnowledge of diagnosis and treatment of common lab animal diseases, and identification of conditions which may result from research proceduresAbility to work on weekends and holidays on a rotating basisAbility to work overtime if necessary, to maintain integrity of a research protocolAbility to wear and utilize protective clothing, equipment, and procedures as may be required when working with certain research protocolsWork independently as well as in a team environmentBe responsible, organized, and a problem solverPossess strong attention to detail, analytical, time management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsProfessional proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, and LabTracksEmbody the Institute’s core values of Commitment, Collaboration, Communication, Community and CompassionSupervisory Responsibilities :

Compensation : The expected hiring range for this position is $23 - $26 / hour commensurate with experience.
