Fleet Mechanic I, II, III The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking a Fleet Mechanic. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.5 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241mgd. Position Summary : Responsible for the repair, maintenance, and installation of all PVSC vehicles and associated operating equipment. Requirements : Must have solid knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and other related equipment, as well as knowledge of auto body maintenance and garage practices. Must be able to read, understand and use automotive repair manuals and pneumatic / hydraulic schematics. Must have knowledge of the safety precautions that must be exercised during mechanical and auto body repair tasks. Must be available for emergencies / job assignments on a 24-hour basis. Experience, Licenses and Certifications : Must possess a valid N.J. driver's license with a minimum CDL Class B endorsement. Class A preferred. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is also preferred but not required. Fleet Mechanic I - Minimum nine (9) years’ experience as a vehicle mechanic, three of which must include the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engine vehicles, hydraulic systems and other related equipment. Fleet Mechanic II - Minimum seven (7) years’ experience as a vehicle mechanic, three of which must include the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engine vehicles, hydraulic systems and other related equipment. Fleet Mechanic III - Minimum four (4) years’ experience with automotive equipment repair in a shop with a modern preventive maintenance and inventory control program. Education : High school diploma or equivalency certificate required. Advanced training from an accredited technical or trade school is also preferred but not required. Physical Demands : Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body such as climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping and handling heavy objects. Working Conditions : Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors. The expected base pay range for this position is $76,950 to $118,020. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
