Job Description

SUMMARY :

As one of the Public Health Institute's programs, Health Intervention Projects for Underserved Populations (HIPUP) conducts community-based research / programs for underserved populations (e.g., gender and ethnic minorities) in the field of substance abuse, HIV / AIDS, and trauma prevention and treatment. Through collaboration with targeted communities, HIPUP strives to impact health promotion and human rights for underserved communities locally and internationally.

Improving the Wellness for Asian Youth 2 (IWAY2) Project at HIPUP seeks high school students to assist with advocacy activities regarding trauma-informed care / prevention and youth events addressing mental health issues in Asian American Asian Immigrant (AAAI) communities. IWAY2 aims to provide trauma-informed treatment and other services to reduce psychological symptoms / behavioral problems and provide youth empowerment programs to promote health and well-being for Asian American and immigrant children and families in Alameda County, CA.

Serving in the role as Advocacy Interns, the Intern Level I's work closely with the IWAY2 Health Educators and take the lead in spreading awareness about the community's unmet needs regarding traumatic events and stress. The Advocacy Internship offers a learning opportunity that equips interns with leadership skills and makes them ambassadors for increasing mental health awareness in AAAI communities.

HIPUP is looking for 3 Advocacy Interns.

This is a regular part-time 10% FTE position that is required to work 4 hours per week . The internship will last for one academic year, from August 2025 to August 2026, with a preferred start date of August 4, 2025. The expected end date will be determined upon hire.

This position is currently remote and is required to travel within Alameda County to conduct outreach activities a few times per year . Candidates and incumbents must be students who attend high schools in Alameda County.

Full pay range for this position : $17.75 to $20.11 per hour. The typical hiring range for this position is from $17.75 (minimum) to $18.93 (midpoint) per hour. The starting wage is determined using a variety of factors, such as the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as internal equity consideration and budget availability.

This position is contingent upon project funding renewal.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following :

Select 1 or more of the following to accomplish during the internship duration :

• Create social media posts about individual and community action to promote trauma-informed care & prevention for the AAAI community.
• Create social media posts to spread awareness about trauma-informed care, prevention, and mental health issues in the AAAI community.
• Contact government representatives and other policy decision-makers to inform them about trauma-informed care and prevention for AAAI s.
• Identify and develop an advocacy campaign for policy changes regarding AAAI trauma-informed care and prevention.
• Propose a new project not listed above in collaboration with project staff.

Plus, travel within Alameda County to conduct outreach activities a few times per year.
