PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Problem Gambling Counselor within the Counseling, Therapy, and School Psychology Department reports directly to the Director of Problem Gambling Services and and will collaborate with the Director, Assistant Director, and Administrative Coordinator closely. This role is primarily responsible for providing individual, relational, and group therapy to individuals, couples, and families impacted by problem gambling, maintaining accurate clinical documentation, and supporting community outreach and training activities. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical expertise in problem gambling and addiction counseling, experience providing trauma-informed and socially just care, and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting. To be successful in this position, the individual must excel at building trusting therapeutic relationships, maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards, modeling professionalism for student trainees, and contributing to a compassionate and inclusive learning and treatment environment.

This position is supported by Oregon Health Authority which allocates funds for problem gambling services. This funding is currently for the 2025-2026 year. Continuation of employment is dependent on continued funding by the Oregon Health Authority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Clinical Counseling and Case Management

  • Provide individual, relational, and group therapy to individuals, couples, and families impacted by problem gambling.

  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and develop individualized treatment plans aligned with Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and Problem Gambling Services (PGS) standards.

  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in compliance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality regulations.

  • Apply trauma-informed and social justice–oriented counseling approaches in all client interactions.

  • Prepare for and actively participate in individual and group supervision.

  • Demonstrate ability to provide and receive clear and direct feedback.

  • Support training and orientation for graduate assistant counselors, interns, and volunteers as needed.

  • Demonstrate the ability to model the standards of the profession to students and trainees.

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Collaborate with the Directors and Administrative Coordinator to promote public awareness of problem gambling and available treatment services and facilitate GBIRT trainings in the community.

  • Foster relationships with community organizations to expand access to PGS services and resources.

Program Administration and Collaboration

  • Works collaboratively within the team, shows professional maturity, and takes a solution oriented stance with both clients and colleagues.

  • Uphold ethical, professional, and institutional standards as a representative of Lewis & Clark College.

  • Work closely with the Administrative Coordinator.

Professional Development and Continuous Improvement

  • Engage in ongoing education and certification maintenance, including required training for Certified Gambling Addiction Counselor (CGAC) status.

  • Participate in staff meetings, workshops, and professional development opportunities to enhance clinical competence and cultural responsiveness.

  • Proficient in applying trauma-informed and social justice–oriented counseling practices within clinical settings

  • Knowledge of gambling addiction, recovery models, and mental health interventions

  • Superior understanding of ethical and legal standards governing clinical work, including HIPAA, FERPA, and 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality regulations

  • Proficient in using electronic health record systems and maintaining accurate, secure clinical documentation

  • Strong command of diagnostic and treatment planning frameworks, including ASAM placement criteria and stages of change

  • Excellent written and verbal communication that supports clarity, compassion, and professionalism across client and team interactions

  • Extremely skilled in maintaining confidentiality, exercising sound judgment, and managing sensitive information with discretion

  • Proficient in applying motivational interviewing techniques and integrating evidence-based therapeutic approaches for co-occurring treatment

  • Superior interpersonal and collaborative skills that foster trust, cooperation, and mutual respect within interdisciplinary teams

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusion and ensuring that all individuals feel respected, heard, and supported in therapeutic and workplace settings

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and clinical data tracking tools for case documentation and reporting

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills for balancing multiple caseloads, documentation deadlines, and collaborative meetings

  • Excellent capacity for self-reflection, openness to feedback, and commitment to continuous professional growth and ethical practice

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Current licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or registration as a Professional Counselor Associate or Marriage and Family Therapy Associate

  • Certification as a Certified Gambling Addiction Counselor I (or will obtain within the first year of employment)

  • At least one year of full-time clinical counseling experience, providing direct therapeutic services to individuals, couples, or families

  • Demonstrated experience applying trauma-informed, social-justice-oriented, and community-based counseling practices

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • At least two years of post-graduate clinical counseling experience in addiction or problem gambling treatment settings

  • Experience with working with student trainees or interns

  • Advanced training or experience in motivational interviewing, trauma recovery, ASAM Patient Placement Criteria or addiction treatment

  • Preferred Tech: Workday, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, electronic health record systems, and data-tracking tools

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Full Time/Part Time: Full Time

  • Schedule: 37.5 hours per week, weekend availability needed

  • Benefit Eligible: Yes

  • Travel: Limited local travel for outreach, community events, or professional development

  • In Person: Primarily on-site, in person with limited hybrid flexibility as approved by the Director of Problem Gambling Services

PAY RATE

  • FLSA Status: Exempt

  • Starting at $68,000 per year, with consideration for experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • General office and counseling environment

  • Prolonged periods of sitting while meeting with clients or working at a computer

  • Frequent use of computer, phone, and online meeting platforms for documentation and communication

  • Engages in face-to-face and virtual interactions with clients, students, and colleagues

  • Occasional need to lift and move up to 20 pounds for outreach materials or office supplies

  • Maintains focus and composure in emotionally charged or sensitive client situations
