Skilled Maintenance Mechanic III

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The job of Skilled Maintenance Mechanic is done for the purpose / s of providing maintenance services with specific responsibility for ensuring completion of assigned work order projects; performing a wide variety of skilled maintenance activities; assisting other maintenance workers; working all shifts and acting on-call; and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site.

REPORTS TO : Facility Manager

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Attends educational seminars and meetings for the purpose of maintaining and upgrading job knowledge, skills and resolutions to safety issues.
• Communicates with vendors when needed for coordination of projects, estimates, labor, and materials for the purpose of obtaining materials and personnel required to ensure job completion. ? Informs personnel regarding procedures and / or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and / or complying with building and safety regulations.
• Installs a wide variety of materials for the purpose of providing enhancements and / or upgrades.
• Maintains building systems, vehicles, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit pertaining to District 219.
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance for the purpose of ensuring the ongoing functioning of facilities.
• Performs a variety of skilled trade functions for the purpose of completing projects within established time frames.
• Repairs facilities, equipment and systems for the purpose of ensuring a safe working environment.
• Transports a variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
• Troubleshoots errors and / or problems with building systems, equipment and school facilities for the purpose of maintaining school facilities and operations
• Updates records for the purpose of documenting activities and / or conveying information.
• Operate snow removal and ice management equipment. (valid driver's licenses required)

Skills

• Perform skilled maintenance in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades
• Use hand and power tools skillfully and safely
• Operate scaffolds, lifts, ladders, and work in tunnels
• Follow blueprints and plans
• Journeyman in two of the following : HVAC-R, electrical, plumbing, or carpentry
• Perform basic math, including calculations with fractions, percentages, and ratios
• Read technical information and compose documents
• Analyze situations to define issues, draw conclusions, and develop solutions
• Methods, practices, equipment, and tools used in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing trades
• Health and safety regulations
• Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies
• Requirements for maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
• Knowledge of board policy, district, state, and federal regulations / laws
• Schedule activities and gather / classify information
• Consider a wide variety of factors when performing tasks
• Work flexibly with others in various circumstances
• Utilize equipment under different conditions for multiple purposes

Responsibility

Responsibilities include : working under limited supervision following standardized practices and / or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job's functions. There is opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands : significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes (indoors, outdoors) and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and / or illness.

Experience

Job related experience within a specialized field is required.

Education

Community college and / or vocational school degree with study in job-related area and / or participation in a formal apprenticeship program.

Education Equivalency

Equivalent experience in job related field.

Required Testing Certificates

Job Fit Test, IL Driver's License / Proof of Insurance, EPA CFC Certification

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : 260 day work calendar

SALARY GRADE : M3 on salary schedule
