JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse Coordinator Emergency Department Patient Flow Coordinator is responsible for efficient flow and throughput in the Emergency Department.

The patient flow coordinator ensures that patients coming in through triage are effectively evaluated, treated, and roomed as quickly as possible.

The patient flow coordinator is also responsible for waiting room patient re-assessments, providing updates to waiting room patients, and working with physicians / providers to coordinate early testing to expedite patient care.

The patient flow coordinator also looks at the timely movement of admitted patients as well as Emergency Department discharged patients.

Provides direct nursing care to patients, assumes teaching and leadership responsibilities. Participates in shared decision making, unit committee and quality improvement activities.

Needs minimal supervision. The Emergency Department Registered Nurse Patient Flow Coordinator independently plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in patient care situations using standards of care, policy, and procedure.

The primary role of the ED Patient Flow Coordinator RN is the care for all types and age groups of emergency and minor care patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned.

  • The Patient Flow Coordinator’s primary responsibility will be to facilitate flow through the ED.
  • He / She will delegate care to the ED care teams and assign patients, ensuring that the workload is balanced and delegates tasks appropriately, employing resources as needed to assure quality and efficient care.
  • Ability to quickly assess and triage patients arriving at the Emergency Department.
  • Oversight of incoming clinical flow in the Emergency Department including walk-in patients, EMS, and transfers.
  • Oversight of outgoing clinical flow including discharged patients, admissions, and transfers.
  • Participates in hourly rounding for patient safety and patient experience.
  • Works to achieve goals for patient flow metrics and patient and family satisfaction.
  • Displays a high level of integrity, empathy, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Develops plan that includes strategies to attain expected outcomes.
  • Implements the plan of care interventions and medical plan of care as appropriate.
  • Coordinates care delivery.
  • Employs patient teaching to promote health and safety.
  • Evaluates progress toward outcomes.

  • Accountable to foster, participate, and be knowledgeable with the shared decision-making model of the NCH Healthcare System.
  • Uses the appropriate aged Adult or Pediatric Triage Assessment sheet which utilizes the five-tiered system.
  • Monitoring Skills : cardiac rhythm interpretation, pulse oximetry, hemodynamic measurements, and interpretation.
  • Maintenance of Emergency Department specific certifications, BLS, ACLS, and PALS. (PALS certification-of Emergency Department assignment).
  • Safe use, knowledge and troubleshooting of equipment specific to the Emergency Department.
  • Participates in the orientation of new nursing personnel and is welcoming to all employees’ serves as preceptor.
  • Cross-train to all areas of the Emergency Department including EDX and MIN ADULT ED.
  • Accountable and responsible for the care of admitted patients and for completion of inpatient orders of patients waiting for admission.
  • Maintains continuum of care by referral of patients to the Follow Up Nurse, Case Manager, or appropriate community agencies.
  • Knowledgeable of patient tracking system and consistently keeps the system updated in a timely manner.
  • Able to function in a fast paced, high-volume environment making rapid critical decisions.
  • Assists peers with assignments by being aware of activities within the department, assists peers without prompting and responds to needs in other areas.
  • Flexible in rotation of schedules to meet the needs of the department and cooperating with whatever decision is most likely to benefit the team, receptive to new ideas.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with Hospital policy and HIPAA regulations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as RN in an Emergency Department or similar type acute care setting.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Florida.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • ENPC desirable.
  • TNCC desirable.
  • ASN required. BSN preferred.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge : Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
