Job Summary

The JJBH Clinical Research Coordinator position is with Dr. Marina Tolou-Shams' Juvenile inJustice Behavioral Health (JJBH) research team in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco and Division of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Zuckerberg SF General Hospital (ZSFG). The UCSF-ZSFG JJBH research team engages in a program of research that incorporates epidemiological / observation, behavioral intervention efficacy trial, and structural-level approaches to understanding how to improve behavioral health (HIV and sexually transmitted infections risk, psychiatric symptoms, substance use), legal (recidivism) outcomes for publicly (Medi-Cal) insured and / or systems-involved youth and young adults. The JJBH Clinical Research Coordinator will join a national multi-cultural, multi-lingual team who are dedicated to improving behavioral health outcomes and reducing health disparities among publicly-insured and / or system-involved youth and adult populations. The primary functions of this position will be on digital health, behavioral health, and navigator related projects. Example studies include evaluating a digital health app for foster youth that provides mental health and resource navigation services; developing a Less Restrictive Program (LRP) for youth detained in Secure Youth Treatment Facility (SYTF) programs who are interested in pursuing higher education; and assessing the impact of structural racism on the health outcomes of justice-involved youth.

Under the supervision of a JJBH Supervisor, the incumbent will work closely with Dr. Marina Tolou-Shams and JJBH collaborators and partners to help coordinate and support Dr. Marina Tolou-Shams' JJBH research grants. The incumbent will provide clinical research support on JJBH projects through a variety of tasks, including but not limited to : 1) aiding with participant recruitment, consenting, enrollment and retention; 2) primary and secondary data collection (including electronic medical chart review and data extraction) and database management; 3) delivering navigator interventions being tested for efficacy across various settings serving publicly-insured and / or system-involved youth and families; 4) supporting the care coordination and delivery of digital mental health interventions being tested; and 5) preparing reports for Institutional Review Boards and grant funders, and any other necessary paperwork related to JJBH research projects including presentation, manuscript, and grant preparation. The home location of the incumbent will be UCSF Pride Hall, but up to 50% of their time may be spent working / traveling in the Bay Area (e.g., Alameda, Contra Costa).

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $34.32 - $55.19 (Hourly Rate).

The UCSF Juvenile inJustice Behavioral Health (JJBH) Research Team includes a program of research aimed toward improving behavioral health outcomes for youth involved in the justice, child welfare, and foster care systems. Studies aim to improve youths' physical, mental, and emotional health; reduce drug and alcohol use; reduce HIV / STI risk behaviors; prevent recidivism; identify ways to improve access to and engagement in health care for these youth, thereby reducing health inequities.

Required Qualifications

  • HS graduation (or equivalent GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience; sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Computer literate, fluent with software packages including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Project coordination or management experience.
  • Superior interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others; good team member. Ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines, able to set priorities and work independently. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; detail oriented.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Excellent documentation skills, ability to set priorities, work both independently and collaboratively, excellent follow-up, work well under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer and word processing skills, using standard IBM / PC software (such as : WordPerfect, Microsoft Word Excel, Access and / or PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written skills. Demonstrated experience with writing, editing, proofreading, and revising / updating protocols and documents.
  • Proven flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities.
  • Incumbent must have a vehicle to travel throughout the greater Bay Area to assist with recruitment and be willing to spend significant time across Bay Area Counties (e.g., Alameda, Contra Costa).
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating meetings.
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in Psychology (or a related field such as Sociology) and Statistics.
  • Master's degree in psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • Six months to one year of related work experience
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking. Proof of bilingual certification or linguistic ability may be requested.
  • At least one-year minimum research experience, including experience with preparing study materials, recruiting and enrolling study participants, and data collection.
  • Experience working directly with system-involved youth and families.
  • Experience conducting statistical analyses and writing up research findings using SPSS, SAS, R, or a comparable statistical software package.
  • Experience conducting qualitative analysis and writing up research findings using Atlas.ti, Nvivo, or a comparable software package.
  • Experience conducting electronic medical record chart review and data extraction
