Police Lieutenant
The City of Richmond Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Lieutenant. This position will provide high level supervisory, public relations, or community services duties as an assistant to the commander of a major division, an officer-in-charge of a community sector or other specific unit within the department.
Duties include but are not limited to managing general field operations including : supervising patrol and other staff operations; monitoring investigations and field activities to determine effectiveness of policing and compliance; instructing and assisting subordinates in the supervision and management of their units; preparing management and activity reports; creating, coordinating, directing and attending community meetings; participating in special projects, communicating with various media entities, and performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, special certifications and licenses : In accordance with the Richmond Coalition of Police (RCOP) and the City of Richmond Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 12, Section 3 (Part 2. Promotions) : MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE : Candidates must have two (2) years of continuous (no break in service) experience as a Police Sergeant with the City of Richmond. There is no experience credit for service in an Acting capacity. Qualified continuous service is the immediate / current two (2) years prior to November 2, 2025. Experience as a Police Sergeant begins with the appointment date to the rank of Sergeant in a permanent status (includes promotional adjustment / probation period). Candidates must also have an overall performance rating of at least successfully meets expectations in the performance evaluation period ending June 30, 2025. No more than a total of six (6) days suspension in the past 24 months; no substantiated incidents of excessive force in the past 24 months; no arrests for a criminal offense in the past 24 months unless found not guilty in the court of law; valid Drivers license. Achievement of the above stated qualifications must be met by November 2, 2025. Promotion Process : Applicants will be screened for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet or exceed the minimum qualifications will be notified of their eligibility to participate in the 2025 assessment center examination process. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a considerable understanding of the below sources during the assessment center examination process. Actual starting salary will provide for placement within the Lieutenants salary range that offers a minimum of a 5% increase. FLSA status : Non-exempt position, eligible for overtime.
