Job description

The Director of Community Based Services provides strategic leadership and operational management of behavioral health programming within their assigned region. This role ensures teams deliver high-quality, client-centered, accessible services across a variety of lines, such as Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), Community Support, Nurse Care Coordination, Targeted Case Management, Supported Employment, and others.

The Director works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to implement evidence-based practices, advance organizational priorities, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Job Duties :

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for assigned programs and staff, fostering a collaborative, supportive, and values-driven culture.
  • Oversee program quality and outcomes, ensuring evidence-based practices are implemented and performance improvement measures are in place.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate new and existing behavioral health programs, with a focus on community needs, best practices, and service expansion opportunities.
  • Recruit, train, coach, and support program managers and multidisciplinary teams, promoting staff development and cultivating a high-performing, mission-driven workforce.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as accreditation standards (including COA and CCBHC). Maintain policies, audit readiness, and timely reporting.
  • Promote culturally competent, trauma-informed, client-centered services that respect autonomy, dignity, and individual needs.
  • Address client concerns / grievances as needed.
  • Collaborate across departments, including administrative, financial, and executive teams, to align initiatives and enhance service delivery.
  • Partner with leadership to develop and monitor budgets, and allocate resources effectively.
  • Participate in grant writing and external funding opportunities.
  • Direct data collection and reporting efforts to assess program performance and prepare documentation for leadership, regulators, and stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, government agencies, courts, healthcare providers, advocacy groups, and funders.
  • Represent the organization in community committees or task forces as assigned.
  • Other job-related duties as directed by leadership.

Required Skills / Abilities :

  • Proven capacity for strategic planning, problem-solving, and data-driven decision making.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented approaches, and culturally competent practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • High professional standards with commitment to confidentiality, ethics, and client rights.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and providing inclusive services.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, EHR and telehealth systems, and data management tools.
  • Able to lead effectively in high-pressure situations and emergency clinical interventions.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and resource stewardship.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and awareness of industry trends and policy changes.

  • Education and Experience :

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, psychiatry, or related behavioral health field preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Active clinical license preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in behavioral health program administration, including 3+ years in leadership or supervisory roles.
  • Experience overseeing programs such as ACT, Community Support, Family Centered Treatment, Specialty Courts, or Case Management strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including those with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, justice involvement, and families in crisis.
  • Valid driver's license, proof of liability insurance, and ability to travel for agency business.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • In-office work environment with frequent computer use and participation in both virtual and in-person meetings with clients, families, staff, and community partners. Occasional remote work may apply.
  • Regular use of a company-issued laptop and cell phone.
  • Ability to travel to agency sites and community locations for meetings and program needs.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule as needed, including evenings, weekends, and on-call hours, to meet organizational needs or respond to urgent situations.
