Job description

Duty Schedule:

40 hours per week

Summary/Objective of Position:

The successful applicant must have the background and experience to provide instruction and research in aspects of Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Laboratory Sciences including but not limited to Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Immunochemistry and Cell & Tissue Culture, Medical Education and Bioethics courses in a BS in Biology/Biomedical degree programs. A Ph. D. is preferred, and the ability to mentor thesis students at graduate level is highly recommended.


Description of Essential Functions of the Position

The candidate will help maintain teaching and research cycles, help develop laboratory and research capacities in coordination with Dine educational philosophies and beliefs, and perform and instruct all necessary microbiology, immunological, biochemical, and cell and tissue culture techniques to fulfill teaching and research program requirements. The candidate will also help develop research and outreach support for health disparities in the local communities particularly emerging infections and diseases. Basic and applied research will be conducted at Dine College with cooperating organizations and institutions, and with undergraduate/graduate students, to help develop healthy communities via productive contribution.
The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with other STEM faculty across campuses. The academic home for the position will be in the Department of STEM within the Dine College at the Shiprock Campus.
Information obtained from the research program will be incorporated into journal submission and through outreach programs that engage closely with the other team members of the Biomedical Sciences program to facilitate information transfer through research publications, presentations, and media, community-based meetings, field demonstrations, workshops, and other training events.
(80%) Instruction, Research, and Scholarship: Provide primarily undergraduate and graduate student instruction in, but not limited to Anatomy & Physiology, pathophysiology, medical microbiology, immunology, immunochemistry, bioinformatics, cell and tissue culture, and molecular microbiology. Faculty are encouraged to establish and maintain an externally funded research program in the area of biomedical and clinical laboratory sciences. Collaborate with professional colleagues, industry members, and cooperating organizations/ institutes to develop and implement basic and applied for undergraduate/graduate research programs in health and biomedical sciences in relation to sustainable needs for the indigenous communities, and to incorporate that information into local healthcare infrastructure.
(5%) Extension and Outreach: Extend information from research program into practical recommendations and guidance for local communities and healthcare facilities to improve clinical and diagnostic facilities and healthcare management by local workforce training and development. Develop best management practices for traditional, existing, and new facilities in relation to traditional Dine ways of healing and indigenous sovereignty.
(10%) Mentoring, Advising, and Supervision: Mentor and serve as an advisor to students; train and supervise personnel in conducting research at the undergraduate, and graduate and serve on the graduate committees of other graduate students. Supervision of technical staff if grants are developed.
(5%) Service: Faculty are expected to be collegial members of their units, and to perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of their units, departments, the College, and their professions.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

A minimum of a Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences or similar field is required, while a Ph. D. is preferred. The successful applicant must be credentialed in all courses in Biomedical Science program. Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred:

MD and / or Ph. D. in Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical/Clinical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, or related fields.

Knowledge:

Skills:

Effective communication-effective written, spoken, and non-verbal communication skills. Problem-solving and decision-making skills. Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory. Native American Indian preference is exercised. A faculty is expected to have a high degree of proficiency in course related technical skills in using various equipments, and computer software used to support the administration of higher education. Software use include but is not limited to, general Microsoft office functions such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and various Internet platforms such as zoom. In addition, a faculty is expected to utilize academic-specific programs for course delivery (Face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous), and course maintenance (such as student advising, grade submissions, posting of syllabus, etc. using Jenzabar, blackboard etc).

Abilities:

A faculty expected to have a high degree of proficiency in computer software used to support the administration of higher education. Software use include, but is not limited to, general office functions, such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Blackboard LMS, and Internet services. In addition, a faculty is expected to utilize academic-specific programs for course delivery (face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous), and course maintenance (such as grade submissions, posting of syllabus, modules, course itinerary, etc.).

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

Use of College vehicle, which requires updated Navajo Nation Public Highway Safety certificate. Works primarily, although not exclusively, in a climate controlled environment. This position requires average agility and good physical condition. Must be able to lift 25 pounds. Work requires lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing and other physical exertion at times.
