Job Summary

The Commercial Underwriter I is responsible for underwriting, quoting and selling small business risks through agency partners, and in the maintenance and upkeep of program rating data, forms, etc., working with system vendors as needed. The position also plays an active role in developing new products, pricing, and coverages, and is involved in monitoring and providing updated information and content for our web presence. The ideal qualified candidate will have advanced underwriting skills and be a sales-orientated insurance professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high energy business environment. Key success factors include : account pre-qualification, risk analysis, information validation, classification, pricing adequacy, thought process documentation, collaboration, negotiation, and making the sale. This role may include mentoring and coaching less experienced underwriters on more complex accounts, referral underwriting, and becoming the subject matter expert on emerging issues and complex classes / coverages.

Essential Functions

• Solicit, underwrite and price new and renewal small commercial property and casualty business
• Selects new business and evaluates renewal accounts in accordance with company underwriting philosophy, established authority parameters, as well as written / verbal procedures and guidelines
• Travels to agencies providing field underwriting and quoting as needed (Up to 10% Travel)
• Reviews claims activity, loss control surveys, and inspection reports for existing policies, handling as required.
