Job Summary
Bruin Pantry Peer Specialists will support the Bruin Pantry network by assisting general operations. Through the Bruin Pantries, SLCC distributes a variety of foods and hygiene products to students, faculty and staff at SLCC.
Our team of staff, student leaders and volunteers receive, processes donations and distribute these goods equitably and efficiently while clearly communicating pantry policies and other relevant information.
Bruin Pantry Specialists takes inventory food stock at an assigned pantry location, purchases or rescues food from local stores, consults with teammates regarding resource reallocation, and transports products across various campuses.
Success of this role is measured by well-stocked and equitably distributed resources available to visitors during distribution hours.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Take regular inventory of food availability at an assigned pantry location (Taylorsville Redwood, South City, West Valley Center, Jordan, and / or Herriman Campus).
- Communicate missing food groups to supervisor and plan restocking strategies.
- Ordering and purchasing food supplements to fulfill dietary needs of pantry visitors. Learn and execute SLCC’s purchasing policies and procedures.
- Stock pantries with food supplements from purchases, donations, pantry relocation, and food rescue program.
- Transport food supplements across the pantry network.
- Exhibit positive customer service and inclusive relationship building when interacting with pantry visitors.
- During academic breaks and finals, supplement coverage during pantry distributions.
- Must be able to work 29 hours per week.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Driving is an essential part of this position; candidates have to be 21 or over.
This position requires driving to multiple campuses with food and hygiene items from Redwood campus or purchased from local stores.
Ethical budget discretion is expected. Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Critical thinking / problem solving : Ability to think of food systems on a global and state level to understand root causes of the food insecurity.
- Addressing food insecurity on campus through creative means, partnerships and relationship building while also connecting to resources on campus to address other needs of the students at SLCC.
- Teamwork / collaboration : Collaboration with different offices at SLCC, tuition waiver students, coordinators at Thayne Center, and volunteers.
- Professionalism / work ethic : Understand that the Specialists, CIP role and Peer Leader roles are vital to pantry operations and be dependable.
Specialists need to be able to work with student leaders and are expected to treat the pantry users of different backgrounds respectfully.
Oral / written communication skills : This position relies on effective communication in person, emails, and phone calls.
The candidate should have a good oral and written communication skills.
- Basic Knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite software
- Experience with or interest in one or more of the following :
- Nutrition, Healthy Eating, Food Systems
- Social / Behavioral Sciences including Psychology, Sociology, Education, Social Work, etc.
- Sustainability
- Public Health
- Non Profit Administration
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
