Description
Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is looking for a System Safety Engineer with the ability to obtain a security clearance to join our Advanced Weapons team in Northridge, CA. The role supports our programs for defining and architecting a secured missile weapon system. You will work closely with team members from other projects within the organization, as well as external partners and customers, on security architecture designs.
The selected candidate will work on-site in Northridge, CA. Relocation assistance, while not guaranteed, may be available.
What You'll Get To Do
Join the System Safety team within Specialty Engineering. Activities include system safety analysis of military weapon systems, participation in risk assessments / resolution and mishap investigations. The ideal candidate will have experience with MIL-STD-882E and familiarity with related standards (MIL-STD-882, RCC 319, AFSPCMAN 91-710, ASTM, ANSI, NEC, AFOSH, AOP-52, JOTP-051, PESHE, NFPA). This requisition may be filled at Principal or Sr. Principal level based on qualifications.
Responsibilities include developing and reviewing system safety artifacts and safety documentation, collaborating with internal and external customers, and ensuring safety requirements are integrated into system design.
Responsibilities
- Perform system safety analysis of military weapon systems.
- Contribute to risk assessments, risk resolution, and mishap investigations.
- Apply MIL-STD-882E and related standards to mitigate hazards in design, equipment, and procedures.
- Document hazards using a closed-loop Hazard Tracking System (HTS).
- Develop safety documentation (SSPP, PHA, FHA, SHA / SuSHA, Bent Pin Analyses, FTA, SAR, Software Safety Analysis) and safety requirements.
- Develop, review, update, and approve system safety artifacts and requirements.
- Demonstrate leadership, work independently, and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- U.S. citizen with ability to obtain a Secret DoD Security Clearance within a reasonable period.

Basic Qualifications For a Principal System Safety Engineer
BS in Electrical Engineering or relevant degree with 5 years of related experience, or MS with 3 years of related experience.Familiarity with electrical circuit design / schematics.Experience applying MIL-STD-882E to mitigate hazards.Experience documenting hazards with a closed-loop HTS.Knowledge of system safety principles to develop safety documentation (SSPP, PHA, FHA, SHA / SuSHA, Bent Pin Analyses, FTA, SAR, Software Safety Analysis).Experience developing and approving system safety artifacts and requirements.Strong communication and leadership capabilities; able to work with internal and external customers.U.S. citizen with ability to obtain a Secret DoD Security Clearance.Basic Qualifications For Sr. Principal System Safety Engineer
BS in Electrical Engineering or relevant degree with 9 years of related experience, or MS with 7 years of related experience.Demonstrated application of MIL-STD-882E to mitigate hazards.Experience documenting hazards with a closed-loop HTS.Familiarity with electrical circuit design.Ability to develop safety documentation per MIL-STD-882E (SSPP, PHA, FHA, SHA / SuSHA, Bent Pin Analyses, FTA, SAR, Software Safety Analyses).Ability to develop, review, update, and approve system safety artifacts and requirements.Leadership, independent work capability, and strong communication skills.U.S. citizen with ability to obtain a Secret DoD Security Clearance.Preferred Qualifications
Ability to read and interpret electrical circuit schematics.Experience implementing and testing software safety requirements.Experience in missile system design.Strong working knowledge of military safety standards (MIL-STD-882, RCC 319, AFSPCMAN 91-710, ASTM, ANSI, NEC, AFOSH, AOP-52, JOTP-051, PESHE, NFPA).Knowledge of System Safety Incident Investigation process.Active DoD Security Clearance (investigation within last 5 years).Compensation and Benefits
Primary Level Salary Range : $110,300 - $165,500. Secondary Level Salary Range : $137,400 - $206,000. Salaries vary by scope, responsibilities, experience, and market conditions. Eligible employees may receive overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and long-term incentives. Benefits include health, life and disability insurance, savings plan, holidays, and PTO.
