Description :

The Intermediate Care unit is a critical care step-down unit.

It is dedicated to providing exceptional, evidence-based care to patients.

Patients are received from various departments, including Emergency and Intensive Care Units.

The patient population consists of adult, acute care patients who require specialized care.

All patients have continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring.

Care is provided for patients needing airway management and acute BIPAP support.

The unit also cares for patients with arterial lines and central lines.

Care includes titrated medicated IV infusions depending on each individual's specific needs.

The team adapts quickly, is vigilant, and provides compassionate care.

A multi-disciplinary approach is utilized for patient care.

Candidates must possess strong skills in telemetry and interpretation of dysrhythmias.

Experience with rapid response teams and blood product administration is essential.

Knowledge of central line care, management of cardiac drips, and non-invasive airway management is required.

Isolation precautions are part of the care protocols.

Patient ratios are generally 3-5 depending on the shift.

The unit has interdisciplinary support from various teams including IV, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Services, Social Services, and Pharmacy.

The focus is on all medical diagnoses, especially those related to pulmonary patients.
