Purpose

The Director of the University of Texas Open Source Program Office (UT-OSPO) will execute the vision, strategy, and implementation of open source software engagement for UT Austin.

Responsibilities

Oversee resource development :

  • Develop programming, training, workshops, and other community resources on topics related to open source software and project sustainability
  • Provide grant writing and research collaboration support for researchers working with open source software projects
  • Coordinate student-research matching program to connect students with research-focused open source software development projects
  • As Texas-OSPO expands its work, assist in coordination of programming and resource development
  • Build partnerships across UT Austin and with other open source software communities :

  • Coordinate with UT Austin Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors (OVPR), research deans, and other research support units to promote and support the integration of open source software tools and practices
  • Establish and manage collaborations with the UT-OSPO User Advisory Group, industry, nonprofits, and the international research OSPO network
  • Represent UT-OSPO at national and international open source software consortia, conferences, and advisory boards
  • Project Management Responsibilities :

  • Maintain metrics to assess program impact in alignment with funder obligations
  • Assist in quarterly and annual reporting
  • Participate in proposal development
  • Lead UT-OSPO research related to return on investment (ROI) by university OSPOs
  • Serve as the UT Austin campus liaison to the Texas-OSPO
  • Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Public Policy or another quantitative social science field
  • Ten or more years experience in an academic Office of the Chief Information Officer leadership role, or similar experience
  • At least two years experience directing US university OSPO
  • Demonstrated success in program development and in building and managing multi-stakeholder collaborations
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills, including the ability to engage with various technical and academic communities.
  • Experience teaching quantitative and technology skills coursework
  • Deep familiarity with the University of Texas at Austin
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field
  • Experience leading open source software and research computing initiatives in higher education
  • Coordination of significant projects in multi stakeholder environments
  • Familiarity with university policy frameworks, technology transfer, and research administration.
  • Salary Range

    $150,000 + depending on qualifications

    Employment Eligibility :

    Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers.     Retirement Plan Eligibility :

    The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
