UMCS is a public charter school serving TK through 8th grade. The school is located in Oakland and is open to all children residing in the state of California. We serve a socio-economically, racially and culturally diverse community of children because we believe that all children learn about different backgrounds and perspectives by living and working with people from those backgrounds and perspectives.

Responsibilities

• Partners effectively with the lead teacher to ensure children are growing and achieving at high levels through work tracking, progress monitoring and observation of students
• Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, generates a powerful classroom culture where children have high expectations for themselves and for others, are self-motivated and self-directed, have pride in and care for themselves and their community, and value as well as love learning
• Assists students with activities in the classroom as needed
• Support and coordinates classroom systems and procedures like, snack, body breaks and more
• Supports and implements small and whole group lesson plans and classroom activities consistent with UMCS instructional guidelines as directed by the Lead Teacher
• Assists in establishing and maintaining a harmonious and safe classroom environment
• Builds strong relationships with young people and their families
• Maintain the physical environment daily (Makes sure that consumables used daily are stocked and maintained, dust shelves weekly, disinfects tables and chairs after food is served on them and at the end of the day, organizes materials on the shelves at the end of the day, etc.)
• Participates in weekly all school and department faculty and staff meetings
• Collaborates with UMCS team members to improve own and others' instructional practices; shares best practices
• Works as a team member in team, level, and whole-school settings to create a strong professional learning community
• Meets weekly with the Lead Teacher to set goals and plan
• Documents incidents and accidents and communicates with lead teacher, administration, and families as needed.
• Maintains accurate attendance records
• Is responsible for leading the classroom e.g. following the schedule, rules and emergency policies when the lead teacher is absent
• Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Urban Montessori's mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
• Perform all other duties as necessary as instructed by lead teacher and supervisor

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Ability to speak and write in English
• Two years of successful experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
• CPR and first aid training preferred

Physical Requirements:

• Lift 40 lbs.
• Bend down
• Sit on the floor
• Participate in running, hopping and other movement activities with students
