Position Title : Mass Merchant Sales Lead

Reports To : Sales Manager – Mass Merchant
FLSA Status : Non-Exempt
Compensation : $100,000 – $120,000 annually
Position Summary :
The Mass Merchant Sales Lead is responsible for managing Bailey Nurseries’ strategic relationships with mass merchant accounts. Acting as the primary contact, this role drives sales growth, fosters long-term partnerships, and ensures operational excellence through cross-functional collaboration with internal departments and external stakeholders.
Work Location :
This is a remote position requiring travel to Bailey’s headquarters (Newport, Minnesota), merchant offices, and retail locations as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Oversee all facets of the mass merchant account, including product assortment, forecasting, order processing, logistics coordination, and quality assurance.
- Collaborate with Inside Sales to resolve customer service issues and uphold high levels of client satisfaction.
- Leverage internal and external data analytics to create and implement annual sales strategies, promotional campaigns, and growth initiatives.
- Act as the key liaison between Bailey Nurseries and merchant partners, ensuring clear and timely communication.
- Work closely with Planning and Administration, Production, Inventory, and Logistics teams to synchronize crop availability and shipping timelines with customer needs.
- Partner with brand and marketing teams to enhance brand positioning. Represent the company at national trade shows and vendor events.
- Oversee EDI and data exchanges between Bailey Nurseries and merchant accounts, ensuring accuracy and timeliness through internal and external data analytics.
- Generate and present reports, marketing materials, advertising proposals, and markdown strategies.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding company and customer data, pricing, and proprietary information.
- Stay current on plant innovations, industry trends, and horticultural developments to support customer education and drive sales.
- Conduct regular market visits to assess store-level execution, support merchandising, and identify sales opportunities. Join merchant-led market walks to gain insights into regional trends and customer experience.
- Participate in key meetings, such as national sales meetings and network grower meetings, as assigned.
Required Qualifications :
Proven experience in retail account management.Strong knowledge of retail merchandising, promotions, and consumer marketing.Demonstrated success in building customer relationships and driving retail sales.Excellent presentation and training skills; able to engage and educate retail staff.Skilled in analyzing retail performance metrics and converting insights into strategic actions.Strong cross-functional collaboration.Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-first mindset.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and CRM platforms.Ability and willingness to travel up to 60% of the time within the assigned region.Must meet company criteria through Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review.Preferred Qualifications :
Horticulture or garden center industry experience strongly preferred.Strong proficiency in data analytics.Physical Requirements and Work Environment :
This role involves a blend of office and travel-based work. Travel includes visits to retail locations, customer meetings, and industry events, occasionally in outdoor or greenhouse environments. Candidates should reside within or near the assigned territory.
