The General Manager (GM) is the onsite leader of the hotel and represents the company with guests, clients, associates, and owners. The GM is responsible for delivering results that contribute to the hotel's mission and overall success by achieving performance objectives focused on driving revenue, controlling costs, ensuring guest and associate satisfaction, and delivering product and service quality. The GM works with Sonesta’s marketing, revenue management, and sales teams and with shared services including accounting, facilities, human resources, IT, and procurement to support the hotels.
Duties and responsibilities
- Deliver on the promise of Sonesta Service in all guest and client interactions. Manage according to the Sonesta G.U.E.S.T. standards and instill a passion for customer service in all hotel associates. Create processes to ensure the hotel is properly supplied with guest amenities, outlets meet guest expectations, and the hotel is well maintained and clean.
- Direct the hotel’s sales activities in partnership with the Regional Sales Director and Global Sales Office to secure demand in the hotel’s trade area. Supervise the Director of Sales and collaborate with sales support to execute the hotel’s sales and marketing plan to secure fair market share.
- Manage the overall seasonal demand strategy with the Regional Revenue Manager, optimize revenue via the property management and reservation systems (Opera, Synxis) based on market conditions.
- Regularly sell hotel rooms through direct client contact.
- Establish and implement service recovery guidelines to ensure guest satisfaction and respond promptly to complaints or concerns.
- Oversee Sonesta ES Suites brand positioning through marketing programs, guest recognition (Travel Pass), and adherence to logo / graphic standards.
- Oversee front office, housekeeping, and food & beverage operations via the Operations Manager; oversee appearance, condition, and preventive maintenance with the Maintenance Manager.
- Represent the hotel at Evening Social and Breakfast events to prospect for additional sales leads.
- Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of capital and operating budgets; work with Finance on variances and communicating financial condition to ownership.
- Ensure proper processes for managing and reporting all cash inflows / outflows in collaboration with the General Ledger Accountant, per company policies.
- Ensure proper processes to manage and report on the facility’s condition, annual capital and operating expense budgets, and maintenance for guests and ownership, in collaboration with Engineering and Facilities Operations.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to manage recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and offboarding of associates.
- Work with Information Technology to manage IT assets and systems to service guests and provide ROI to owners.
- Coordinate with Procurement to manage purchasing and identify efficiencies in hotel spending.
- Enforce hotel standards, policies, and procedures within departments.
- Act as “Manager on Duty” as required and ensure compliance with health, safety, and alcohol service laws.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred.Three years as a General Manager, Operations Manager, and / or Director of Sales in extended stay hotels preferred.Fluent English (reading, writing, speaking); other languages beneficial.Professional verbal and written communication skills.Mathematical skills including budgeting, profit / loss concepts, and variances.Problem solving, organizational, and training abilities; ability to prioritize and organize work.Experience with Microsoft Office and Opera systems preferred.Ability to travel, including some overnight travel; valid driver’s license required.Physical requirements : regularly standing, bending, climbing, kneeling, and moving about the facility; exposure to cleaning chemicals; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; willingness to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.Pay and benefits
Pay Range : Salary $85,000 - $87,000. Base pay may vary based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
