Role Overview
The Materials Audit Lead plays a key role in advancing CAA's mission to improve recycling and resource recovery across Colorado. This position oversees CAA's statewide Waste Characterization Program, managing staff and contractors responsible for daily operations, field sampling, and data analysis at the materials audit center. By leading waste and recycling audits, ensuring high-quality sampling standards, and implementing advanced data collection methods, the Materials Audit Lead transforms raw data into actionable insights that drive measurable improvements in recyclable recovery. This role also fosters innovation in sorting, measurement, and reporting processes-helping shape data-driven strategies that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Colorado's materials management system.
Key Responsibilities
CAA Colorado Waste Characterization Program
- Oversee CAA Colorado's waste characterization program.
- Collaborate with CAA's national and state teams to identify key learnings from the waste characterization studies for translation into improved recyclables recovery.
- Maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for material sampling, sorting, weighing, and reporting.
- Plan, schedule and oversee the audit sample sortation and data collection process ensuring comprehensive and accurate composition record keeping.
- Oversee, review, and approve the audit sample composition results, addressing any errors as necessary and implementing process improvements to help eliminate error recurrence. Ensure all record keeping is accurate and uploaded / input into the CAA's tracking system to meet all reporting requirements.
- Report and flag sample results that contain high, unusual, or hazardous contamination and forward this information to the Collections team to address directly with the participating Collector.
- Participate in audit process evaluation and performance management focusing on improvement and implementation of auditing processes and tools to drive efficiency and productivity, reduce error, and enhance performance.
- Coordinate activities related to special studies by identifying additional sorting categories, overseeing necessary logistics and sorting arrangements, and communicating special requirements to the audit team. Produce necessary information for invoicing the special studies as required.
- Collaborate with CAA's national and state teams to harmonize the audit program, protocols, and categories.
CAA Colorado Recyclable Materials Audit Center
Leads the operation of the CAA Materials Audit Center and / or the independent third-party Auditing Center contractor.Works in collaboration with the auditing contractor and / or staffing agency to ensure the facility is sufficiently staffed to fulfill material audit schedules while addressing personnel turnover and accommodating scheduled and unscheduled time off and absences.Ensure Materials Audit Center staff receive sufficient training in sample audit procedure, proper and safe equipment use, audit categories, data collection, and proper data reporting.Direct and oversee the Audit Team staff and / or contractor to ensure the audit work is performed accurately and efficiently.Ensure all service deliverables are met on time. Track and measure Audit Center productivity.Oversee the Materials Audit Center Safety and Compliance programs. Work to build a culture of safety through proactive commitment and training. Report and document all safety related incidents.Ensure the Audit Center is maintained in a clean and well-organized state including proper storage and organization of audit samples, audited materials, and the overall general state of the facility.Ensure audited materials are disposed of properly on a regular basis once the audit is completed.Oversee Materials Audit Center equipment preventative maintenance schedules and repairs keeping the facility operational.Conduct long-term Audit Center capacity planning to ensure future potentially expanded scope of work is supported.Work with the Director of Operations and Operations Manager to develop and maintain the budget for the Audit Center operation.Participating Service Provider Sites
Work with the Colorado Operations Team and participating Service Providers to ensure audit samples are properly collected, stored, and delivered to the Materials Audit Center in accordance with sample collection protocols and as outlined in the Service Agreements.Travel to Service Provider sites to build mutually beneficial partnerships and relationships.Provide help and training to Service Provider tip floor staff detailing how to properly collect and store audit samples, monitor their performance, and provide feedback and support as necessary.Coordinate the timely transport and delivery of audit samples to the Audit Center.Perform other related duties as assigned.Skills & Competencies
Oversees daily audit center operations, manages contractors, and ensures field execution aligns with standards.Deep understanding of waste audits, recyclable material composition, and audit methodologies.Continuously evaluates and enhances audit procedures, integrating new technologies and best practices.Interprets audit data to ensure accuracy, reliability, and actionable insights for materials management.Leads and supports in-field audit teams, ensuring safety, consistency, and compliance with protocols.Coordinates with internal teams and external Service Providers to meet contractual sampling requirements.Manages special audits and studies, adapting processes to meet evolving program needs.Ensures audit samples are collected properly and meet regulatory and organizational standards.Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Waste Management, Industrial Engineering, or related fields or 7+ years related experience.Two or more years in a supervisory or project lead capacity, ideally managing teams in the field or lab.Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Driver's License with clean driving history.Prefer five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in solid waste, recycling, or material recovery facilities (MRFs) with strong knowledge of EPA or ASTM waste characterization methods (e.g., ASTM D5231 standard test method).Hands-on experience with waste composition studies, including sampling protocols, weight / volume measurements, data capture, and reporting.Prior experience designing sample plans or implementing material audits for municipalities, universities, or corporate zero-waste programs is highly desirable.Experience with sorting lines, conveyors, balers, or temporary audit setups.Proficiency with Excel, Access, or database tools for compiling audit data.Ability to translate raw data into dashboards and reports for executives and regulators.Understanding of weighing equipment, safety procedures, and required PPE for audit staff.Strong project management skills such as budgeting, scheduling, staffing.Excellent written and verbal communication including the ability to brief non-technical audiences.Able to build relationships using collaborative and respectful interpersonal skills.Commitment to safety culture and continuous improvement.Physical Requirements
Includes travel to meet with participating Service Providers and stakeholders, including material recovery facilities, and transfer stations.Must be able to lift 50 pounds occasionally as part of audit and sampling activities and assist with moving containers or equipment.Compensation & Other Information
