Job description

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek a Director of IBD to join the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Academic rank track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate IBD Director to join our dynamic team. This role requires a dedicated physician who can lead the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) program in education and research activities. The ideal candidate will have a proven record in education, clinical trials, funded research, or innovative clinical programs.

Under the visionary leadership of Division Director, Georgios Papachristou, MD, PhD, our Division boasts a robust team of 43 clinical and research faculty members. Each faculty member brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in various sub-specialties, collectively dedicated to delivering high-quality patient care, fostering medical innovations, and nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

In recent years, the Division has experienced remarkable growth in its faculty, facilities, and research capabilities. This expansion has enabled us to broaden our clinical services to meet the needs of the rapidly growing Columbus community. With over $5 million in research funding, sourced from both federal grants and industry activities, we are at the forefront of medical research and discovery.

Our Gastroenterology Fellowship Program provides excellent education to future gastroenterologists in the field. Our program annually welcomes six outstanding trainees. These trainees are immersed in an environment of unparalleled education and mentorship, preparing them to become the future leaders in gastroenterology.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide exemplary direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures with precision and empathy.
  • Engage in mentorship and educational activities, shaping the future of gastroenterology by imparting knowledge to medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss complex cases and contribute to comprehensive care plans.
  • Lead and collaborate on clinical and translational research projects, contributing to the advancement of evidence-based practices in gastroenterology.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and stay abreast of the latest advancements in the field.
  • Lead and oversee the IBD program's educational and research initiatives.
  • Manage a variety of responsibilities ranging from direct patient care to educational and research activities within the IBD specialty.
  • Develop and implement innovative clinical programs to improve patient outcomes.
  • Conduct and oversee clinical trials and other research projects.
  • Secure funding for research and educational programs.
  • Mentor and educate medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to advance the field of IBD through continuous research and education efforts.
  • Drive quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes

Requirements

Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Board certification or eligibility from the American Board of Internal Medicine required; active certification from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) required. Completion of an accredited residency in internal medicine and a fellowship training program in gastroenterology or hepatology required.

Faculty Defined

Clinical faculty (regardless of rank)  - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and / or research. ?

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank)  - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD, DO or MD / PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.?

Research Faculty (regardless of rank)  - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.?
