Direct Support Professional I
Job Duties :
A $2,500 hiring bonus is being offered for this position.Hiring bonuses shall only be for new hires of original employment or reemployment as defined in Human Resources Policy No. 5.0.
- $500 will be awarded in the first paycheck.
- $750 will be awarded upon completion of the six (6) month interim performance evaluation with an overall rating of Meets Expectations .
- $1,250 will be awarded upon completion of the employee’s one (1) year probationary period and a performance evaluation with an overall rating of Meets Expectations .
The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a candidate who has experience working with Individuals with Developmental / Intellectual Disabilities in a Day Support setting for the full-time Direct Support Professional (DSP) position for our SkillQuest program.
Duties :
- Provide group day services to adults with developmental / intellectual disabilities, using methods that encourage independence.
- Mobility (prevent falls, use of walkers / wheelchairs, transfers, use of mechanical lift)
- Health care (monitor / report concerns, seizure management, nutrition / hydration, assistance with medications / treatments, teach good health habits)
- Personal Care (use the bathroom, eating)
- Leisure (identify interests, adapt activities to meet needs, increase independence)
- Life Skills (cooking, money, hygiene practices, cleaning, advocacy)
- Socialization (teach generally accepted social behaviors, improve communication skills)
- Community integration (utilize public and other transportation, avoid exploitation, identify / use community resources, volunteer)
- Emotional regulation (avoid / defuse crisis situations, prevent harm to self or others, teach anger management / stress reduction techniques)
- Implements Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) and Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) under the direction of the group leader (behavior specialist) and the clinician responsible for the group to assist individuals with reaching personal goals.
Documents support provided according to current practices.
- Participates in developing a monthly activity calendar focusing on person-centered group activities.
- Reads and provides information daily in communication logs / books for assigned individuals.
- Provide ongoing input to responsible staff regarding changes needed to ISP / IPP and additional information to add to assessments and / or include in the record.

Minimum Requirements :
MINIMUMS : Requires a High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year of direct client care or customer service related experience.
Must have a current and valid driver’s license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
Alpha I Status : Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

Preferences :
Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
Experience working in a day support setting.
Experience with implementing Person-Centered / Individualized Service Plans.
Experience working in a program implementing Medicaid Waiver, Human Rights, and licensure regulations.
Experience providing direct care, including ADLs.
Experience with writing progress notes or regulatory documentation.
Experience working with challenging behaviors.
Experience with creating and implementing group activities.
