Regional Director Of Communications

The Regional Director Of Communications serves as a key leader and storyteller for the American Red Cross in the Missouri-Arkansas Region shaping strategy, amplifying impact, and inspiring action across one of the nation's most active humanitarian regions. Based in St. Louis, this role drives the communications and marketing functions that advance regional business objectives, elevate public understanding of the American Red Cross mission, and strengthen volunteer engagement and revenue generation.

In partnership with the Regional CEO and Division Communications Director, you'll develop and execute bold, creative strategies that connect people to purpose, telling stories that move hearts and minds while ensuring communities know how to access vital Red Cross services. You'll collaborate closely with colleagues across every line of service including : Field Marketing, Fundraising, Disaster Cycle Services, Service To The Armed Forces, Blood Services, Training Services, and Volunteer Services and chapter operations to ensure a unified, powerful regional voice.

You'll lead and mentor both staff and volunteers, building a communications team that shines in times of calm and crisis alike. From guiding media strategy to shaping internal culture, you'll help define how the Red Cross shows up for our team, our partners, and the communities we serve daily.

Lead Bold Strategy

Shape and deliver an innovative, mission-driven communications strategy that amplifies the American Red Cross brand across multiple media markers throughout Missouri, Arkansas, Southwestern Illinois, and Eastern Kansas. Partner with the Regional CEO and Division Communications Director to align regional goals with national priorities, elevating awareness, volunteer growth, blood donation, and revenue generation across the region.

Inspire Media & Social Engagement

Create and lead dynamic media and social strategies that bring humanitarian impact to life. Manage media relationships, craft compelling stories, and grow an authentic online presence that builds trust and engagement. Serve as a Red Cross spokesperson when needed and empower employees and volunteers to confidently represent our mission in the media. Track and analyze engagement data to strengthen storytelling and visibility.

Champion Public Affairs & Crisis Communications

Be a trusted voice in the moments that matter most. Lead disaster public affairs efforts locally and beyond, training and deploying teams to tell powerful stories of hope and resilience during times of crisis. Collaborate with leadership to design and execute effective crisis communication strategies that uphold transparency, compassion, and credibility.

Mobilize & Mentor Volunteer Communicators

Recruit, train, and inspire a diverse network of volunteer communicators in all disciplines who can share the Red Cross story with heart and authenticity. Build a culture of collaboration where volunteers are engaged in daily storytelling and ready to respond when disasters strike.

Strengthen Internal Communications

Design and implement thoughtful internal communications that unite, inform, and energize our regional team of employees and volunteers. Partner with the Regional CEO to ensure every message reflects our values and keeps employees and volunteers connected to our mission and each other.

Coach, Develop & Deliver Results

Lead by example. Set clear goals, mentor a direct report team of three employees, and champion performance excellence. Foster a culture of high engagement, growth, and purpose among staff and volunteers, ensuring the communications function drives measurable impact throughout the region.

Education : Bachelor's degree required in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Affairs or related field.

Experience : Minimum 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Affairs or related field required.

Management Experience : 3 years of supervisory or management experience.

Skills and Abilities : Outstanding oral and written communication skills required, with proven knowledge of AP Style. Manage experienced professionals. Fully proficient in work and industry tools. Strong organizational, multi-tasking skills with ability to meet deadlines. Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with Cision / TrendKite or other media monitoring software preferred. Experience in written and visual storytelling. Experience managing professional social media accounts. Strong teamwork and collaboration required. Willingness to serve as a media spokesperson required, experience as a spokesperson preferred. Ability to work on a team.

Travel : Travel may be required 10-25%.

  • Combination of candidate's education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description's minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
