Substance Use Disorder Counselor

The certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselors provide services at our residential treatment program and

our outreach services. A SUD Counselor will diagnose and assess addiction problems and treat clients in a variety

of ways. A SUD will customize treatment plans for each client and meet regularly with clients as they recover, or

work intensely with individuals in crisis. They teach clients how to alter their attitudes and false beliefs, and develop

strategies to overcome denial and rationalization in the hope of achieving full recovery and an ongoing basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Managing all aspects of a case from date of entry to date of discharge.
• Evaluating the client’s physical and mental behaviors
• Track and analyze patient recovery progression
• Developing appropriate treatment and recovery plans.
• Facilitating individual and group therapy sessions.
• Monitoring patients over time to assess treatment progress.
• Educate clients on coping mechanisms
• Collaborating with clinical supervisor, psychiatrist, doctors, nurses, social workers, and departments of correction
• Identifying behaviors that interfere with treatment and recovery.
• Assisting primary caregivers in managing addiction-related behavior.
• Help clients plan for discharge from facilities
• Lead outreach addiction education programs and develop support groups for patients
• Develop a patient crisis management plan and intervene during emergencies
• Work with clients to find or maintain employment
• Comply with HIPAA (CFR 42, part 2)
• Additional Duties as Needed

COUNSELOR REQUIREMENTS :

• Associate degree in counseling, or a bachelor’s degree with coursework in chemical dependency
• Previous experience with the treatment of substance abuse disorders
• Familiarity with electronic health records
• Experience with co-occurring health and mental health problems
• Counselor certification is based upon the Addiction Counseling Competencies in any alcohol and other drug program licensed or certified by DHCS
• Excellent written and oral Interpersonal skills

• High tolerance for stress and maintains composure
• Personal commitment to uphold and adhere to the Code of Ethics as outlined by the SUD professional requirements
• Understand principles regarding client confidentiality (CFR 42, part 2, HIPAA)
• Ability to work with a team of professionals and implement team strategic approaches to work assignments
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, STC, Inc. employees, outside organizations, other agencies, and the public.
• If in recovery, must have at least seven years’ continuous recovery preferred
• Five (5) years of relevant work experience with adults in dealing with Co-Occurring and Substance Use Disorder
• Employees are to maintain a favorable background check, driving record, driver’s license in California, drug screening, and TB test.
• Maintain CPR & First Aid certification.
• Computer literacy in electronic medical records, Microsoft Office, and email is required.
• Ability to engage in moderate frequency of computer work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
• Provide services at both locations
• Standing for up to 15-20%
• Must be able to lift up to 30-50 pounds occasionally
