Additional Information About the Role Shift information : Monday - Friday 8 am - 4 : 30 pm Types of clients seen : Parent / guardian / caregiver of kids / youth receiving mental health services.

Location : Pagedale Office Location is the home site - but this is a community-based program where you will work in the various STL communities where clients reside Ideal Skill Set : Sharing your lived experiences, ability to provide support and teach skills to clients, connecting well with clients.

MUST HAVE a Certification for this position : Missouri State Family Peer Support Partner Certification Job responsibilities : The Family Peer Support Specialist teaches skills to parents to cope with youth's behaviors / diagnosis (such as de-escalation skills, validation and self-validation skills, and safety planning with parents).

Provides psychoeducation for caregivers, offers support and guidance during the process of navigating mental health system, connect parents to support services, and provides resources for basic needs.

Overview BJC Behavioral Health is a community health center that provides and coordinates behavioral health services for more than 8,000 seriously mentally ill adults and seriously emotionally disturbed children in St.

Louis City, St. Louis County, St. François, Iron and Washington counties. As an Administrative Agent of the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH), BJC Behavioral Health serves as a major point of entry for people eligible for mental health services funded by DMH and is responsible for serving as gatekeeper to the public mental health system.

Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose The purpose of the position is to provide an array of formal and informal services and supports to families with children who are seriously and emotionally disturbed.

Family Peer Support Specialists are uniquely qualified to work with families based on their personal experience parenting a child with similar needs and having successfully navigated multiple child serving systems on behalf of their child.

The services provided should support the parent / family member and enhance his / her skills so the parent / family member can promote positive youth functioning and promote the child’s ability to live successfully in their community.

Responsibilities Family Support

  • Based on strengths and needs of youth and family, assist them to connect with appropriate services and supports. Accompany family when visiting programs
  • Assist family to gather, organize, and prepare documents needed for specific services
  • Address concrete or subjective barriers that may prevent families from fully participating in specific services
  • Serve as a bridge between families and service providers, supporting a productive and respectful partnership by assisting families to express their strengths, needs, and goals
  • Support and assist families during stages of transition which may be unfamiliar (e.g., placements, hospitalizations, juvenile court appearances, etc.) Advocacy and Empowerment
  • Coach and model shared decision-making and skills that support collaboration
  • Regularly consult with families and providers to ensure that the family’s perspectives are included in all planning and decision-making
  • Assist families to identify and set goals and short-term objectives
  • Prepare families for meetings and accompany them when needed Skill Development
  • Help families learn and practice strategies to support their children’s positive behaviors
  • Assist families to implement strategies recommended by clinicians and to talk to clinicians about their comfort with the recommendations
  • Provide emotional support to families to reduce isolation, feelings of stigma, blame, and hopelessness
  • Link to workshops and courses on parenting that are matched to individual needs
  • Assist families to access transportation Community and Natural Support
  • Help families rediscover and reconnect to natural supports already present in their lives
  • Utilize the families’ knowledge of their community in developing new supportive relationships
  • Help families identify and get involved in leisure and recreational activities in their communities
