The Campus Police Officer at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is to ensure that campus and facilities are safe, secure and properly maintained in order to provide a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and visitors. Ensures the compliance and proper application of departmental and agency policies, procedures, rules, and regulations regarding safety, security, and facility matters. Enforce the code of VA as a sworn law enforcement officer as needed. The Campus Police Officer at VSDB is to provide a secure and safe campus for the VSDB faculty, staff, students and visitors.
Minimum Qualifications :
Ability to apply applicable laws, regulations and procedures, through a common sense and diplomatic approach with the best interest of the agency, students, staff, visitors, and the Commonwealth. Current Law Enforcement Certification from VA Department of Criminal Justice Services. Candidates who do not currently hold this certification must be eligible to be recertified through CSCJTA within 90 days of hire. Minimum 3 years prior law enforcement field experience with another Law Enforcement Agency and left in good standing. Valid driver's license at the time of appointment; applicants with six demerits or more are ineligible. Possess a current certification in First Aid and CPR or agree to obtain certification within one year. Ability to exhibit a high level of independence, without requiring direct and / or close supervision. Knowledge of the principles and practices of a public safety and security services. Knowledge of life and fire safety codes, regulations, and proper operation and maintenance of relevant equipment. Ability to react appropriately in emergencies, to include the ability to make life and death decisions as it may relate to the agencies / department crisis management emergency response plan. Knowledge of records management procedures sufficient to prepare and maintain accurate records for the purpose of mandated retention, investigations, evidence, confidentiality, and court testimony. Ability to train, brief and ensure campus public safety officers remain well informed of new / revised policies, procedures and applicable laws as they may relate to the department's assigned duties and responsibilities. Required to train and qualify police officers and armed security officers with duty weapons on the range, to also include active threat techniques. Proficiency level of "Survival" in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specific level within three years Knowledge of computers and telecommunications equipment including word processing, databases, electronic mail, fire alarm systems, and security alarm systems. Must be willing to work various shifts to accommodate agency / department needs, which may include weekends, and holidays. This responsibility may include immediate shift coverage, and / or coordination of shift coverage during an unforeseen event. Certification as an SRO (School Resource Officer) or agree to acquire the training within one year of availability. Ability to obtain general and firearms instructors' certification within 1 year of availability. Ability to obtain armors certification for weapons issued to officers, within 1 year of availability. Certification in the NIMS system to levels specified in the Crisis Management Plan Physical requirements : Must be able to carry out the physical activities of a sworn law enforcement officer as defined by the VA Code, DCJS & CSCJTA Training Academy. Must have working knowledge of facility maintenance practices with strong ability to identify potential hazards and take appropriate safety pre-cautions which may include troubleshooting and minor repairs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Employee identifies building deficiencies and submits work order for repair Completes / attends all required / scheduled training according to stated due dates or as scheduled in accordance with the directives of the Department Head and / or direct supervisor.
