Job Title : Building Substitute Teacher
Organization : Exploration Elementary Charter School for Science and Technology
Reports To : Principal
Duration : 11-Month Position
Position Summary
The Building Substitute Teacher is highly flexible and can adapt to serve in many different roles to support school leaders and staff by providing student supervision, direct or indirect instruction, intervention, administrative support, and / or behavioral or mentorship supports to adequately meet the needs of students in flexible settings (remote / brick-and-mortar) in the absence of the regular teacher.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Be flexible in filling needed roles in the absence or shortage of staff including but not limited to academic, behavioral, and administrative functions
- Serve as a building substitute teacher on short- and long-term assignments in virtual and brick-and-mortar settings
- Support teachers in providing daily classroom routines / rituals when not serving in other essential capacities
- Use state standards to create rigorous, objective-driven, multi-disciplinary lessons aligned with curriculum maps for substitute purposes
- Differentiate for individual students based on their unique learning needs so all students are appropriately engaged and challenged as needed
- Ensure students are engaged through activities and technology that accommodate various learning styles, personality styles, and the need for physical movement as needed
- Provide ongoing and timely feedback to students on their progress towards meeting goals when filling long-term substitute assignments
- Use data to reflect on the effectiveness of lessons and student progress to improve instruction and professional practice
- Always be actively engaging with students when in the classroom, demonstrating flexibility in interpreting and addressing student needs as needed
- Implement classroom procedures, systems, and routines that provide structure for students and maximize instructional time as needed
- Monitor and support students during transition times, lunches, bathroom breaks, recess time, bus arrival, and afternoon dismissal as assigned
- Support the structure and routines of each assigned classroom as designated by the teacher and instructional support staff
- Uphold and model school-wide rules, policies, rituals, and routines always
- Attends quarterly family nights as scheduled
- Regularly use Google for calendaring, email communication, and accessing important documents
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal.

Requirements :
Qualifications Profile
- Highly flexible and collaborative
- Fingerprint clearance from NYS Department of Education
Education
- Current valid New York State Teaching Certificate at the elementary level
- Bachelor’s Degree in education
- Master’s degree in education preferred
- Certificate in Special Education is highly preferred
Experience
- Prior experience with high needs students in an urban setting
- Prior experience with project / inquiry-based instruction
Additional Details
The hiring process for this position will require you to perform a fingerprinted background check through the New York State TEACH System.
