Overview

Lead Professional, Electrical Engineer role at WSP in the U.S. This position can sit in Richmond, VA or Virginia Beach, VA. WSP is initiating a search to join a dynamic team in Virginia.

Job Description

This opportunity provides high level technical assistance and guidance for multi-site / phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, and protection and control systems across utilities, transportation, building, and Federal, State, and local government projects. Substantiates reports and documentation to advise on material, installations, design, component, and construction specifications. Ensures responsibilities are delivered to meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Provide guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to physical work sites, blueprints, GIS data maps, substation components, equipment specifications for procurement, IFR / IRC detailed design and review processes, and standards / regulations such as IEEE, NESC, ANSI, NCEC, and NERC.
  • Coordinate, review and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for smaller and less-complex projects, ensuring data integrity and compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Apply high-level electrical engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Perform professional electrical engineering work related to the design of single line and three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, general arrangement, substation layout, bus arrangements, grounding, and lightning protection in conformance with applicable rules and permits.
  • Plan and incorporate future-ready techniques with equipment sizing, AC / DC panel design, conduit and trenching design strategies to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Review electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, grounding, short circuit studies, protective device coordination, one-line diagram development, protective relaying, and substation layouts.
  • Develop and review plans, specifications, cost estimates, construction safety and phasing plans, and update electrical layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Manage design and construction of electrical infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including rehabilitation, site development, grading, drainage, elevations, materials, phasing, and safety plans.
  • Oversee cross-functional teams to execute project work on mid-level and multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, material / labor cost, permit applications, and regulatory / technical memos.
  • Prepare data and visualizations (tables, charts, reports, calculations, cross-sections) for interpretation or presentation of analyses.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to explain research, findings, concepts, and recommendations to address design or construction issues.
  • Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with Picketts standards.
  • Analyze field investigation data to develop action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation activities.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact professionally with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients; collaborate with engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on funded projects and business opportunities.
  • Stay current with latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Adhere to WSPs Code of Conduct and related policies; exercise responsible decision-making regarding company funds and resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer delivering design for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at utility, industrial, or commercial scale
  • Professional Engineer license is required
  • Proficient with electrical engineering principles, design / build, and permitting aspects
  • Extensive knowledge of infrastructure design
  • Knowledge of adjacent disciplines such as electrical engineering, P&C, SCADA, and telecom
  • Experience with electrical infrastructure planning, design, and construction management on rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects
  • Knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping
  • Ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans / specifications, and compare to regulations
  • Ability to plan inspections and investigations in line with regulations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences
  • Self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization
  • Ability to work independently and guide junior team members with QA / QC adherence
  • Proficiency with design software (CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP, WIN IGS, Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical) and related tools
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to data and calculations
  • Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently
  • Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with WSP policies
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond typical workweeks
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs
